Recreational crabbing is open year-round on the Washington Coast! To help keep soft-shell crabs from harm, pot gear season is now closed in coastal marine areas, but you can still use crab rings, snares, or other traps that lie completely flat on the bottom.

Hoop nets — also known as dome pots or conical nets — do not qualify as ring nets because they don’t lie flat on the bottom or allow the free movement of crab when fished. Help conserve our crab populations by making sure you’ve got the right gear.

Also be sure to only keep crabs that meet the minimum size for the species. Size minimums allow crabs to reach reproductive age, and crabs are measured directly in front of the rear-most points or tips of the shell.

Reminder to anglers fishing from piers and the shoreline in Puget Sound and central coastal bays: It is illegal to fish for, possess, or retain bluntnose sixgill, broadnose sevengill, and thresher sharks in Washington marine waters. It is also illegal to remove bluntnose sixgill sharks from the water.

Some of these sharks come into Puget Sound to give birth during the warmer months from June through October. During this time pregnant females are extremely sensitive and much more vulnerable to sources of stress, such as being caught in fishing gear. Healthy shark populations are an essential part of maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Reported sightings and encounters of these shark species in Washington are common in Marine Areas 10 (Seattle and Bremerton Area), 11 (Tacoma and Vashon Island Area), and 13 (South Puget Sound) – and around the south-central coast in Marine Areas 2-1 (Willapa Bay) and 2-2 (Grays Harbor).

Catching these sharks, even if released, can cause mortality in both the adults and their pups. The impact of handling stress is often compounded by other environmental stressors, like increased water temperatures, poor water quality, and acidification in Puget Sound, lowering their chances of survival further.

Anglers can review regulations – in the Statewide General Rules section – of the Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet or Fish Washington mobile app for the water they plan to fish and check for emergency rule changes before heading out by going to the WDFW fishing regulations webpage.
