🚗 Bad Weather Driving Basics from Skagit 911 Driving School
As the colder and wetter weather sets in around Western Washington it’s more important than ever to stay prepared on the roads. Especially here in Skagit County where we have many rural communities and smaller roads. Here are essential winter driving tips, and a few resources, to help keep you and your loved ones safe.
🌧️Slow down & increase stopping distance. Snow, ice, rain, or slush can make traction unpredictable. Reducing speed and leaving extra space between vehicles gives you more time to react.
🚘Check your tires — pressure, tread, and suitability. Cold weather reduces tire pressure; worn tread makes it harder to grip slick roads. Consider using approved snow or all-weather tires — or tire chains if conditions demand it.
⚠️Maintain your car well before bad weather hits. Check and top off fluids (coolant, windshield washer fluid), test battery and lights, replace worn wiper blades. A quick tune-up can save you from a breakdown at 5 a.m. on your way to school or work.
🧰Build an emergency winter kit. Keep items like blankets, flashlights, ice scrapers, water, snacks, jumper cables, and a shovel in your car. If you get stuck or stranded, these can make a real difference.
⌚Make a plan and allow plenty of travel time. Check weather/road conditions, and make safe decisions based on that information. If it’s not essential, consider postponing trips during bad weather. And if you must drive, go slow, stay alert, and be prepared.
