The Training Never Stops

Being good at this craft means never assuming you already know everything.

Diesel technology keeps changing. New trucks bring new systems, new components, and new diagnostic and repair procedures. Our job is to keep learning with them.

Throughout the year, our technicians attend classes, use online training resources, and continue learning the latest systems and repair techniques. Our service advisors train too, because providing a better experience starts before the truck ever enters the bay.

Some of our guys are even knocking out training during their lunch breaks simply because they're hungry to learn.

Cheap Maintenance. Expensive Consequences.

Fuel contamination doesn't only happen when someone puts the wrong thing in the tank.

Neglected fuel filters can create problems too.

Your fuel filters are there to catch water, sediment, and other contaminants before they make their way through the fuel system. And here in Florida, dirt and sand have a way of getting everywhere.

That's why we take fuel filter maintenance seriously.

We've seen contaminated fuel system repairs reach $16,000-$22,000 depending on the truck and the extent of the damage. Injectors alone can add up quickly, and they're only part of the repair.

Compare that to keeping up with your fuel filters.

Regular maintenance is cheap insurance compared to replacing an entire fuel system.

Put DEF in the Fuel Tank? Don’t Start It.

If you accidentally put DEF in your diesel fuel tank, the next decision can make a massive difference.

Don't turn the key. Don't start the truck.

Once contaminated fuel gets circulated through the system, it can reach the high-pressure pump, injectors, rails, and fuel lines. That's when a mistake at the pump can turn into a complete fuel system repair.

We've seen the damage firsthand. DEF contamination can cause serious corrosion inside components with extremely tight tolerances.

But if the truck hasn't been started, there's a much better chance of addressing the contamination before it gets circulated throughout the entire system.

Made the mistake? Stop right there and get the truck handled properly.

One Mistake. One Expensive Repair.

Fuel contamination can turn into one of the most costly repairs we see come through the shop.

Whether it's DEF in the fuel, gasoline in a diesel tank, or a fuel system failure that sends contamination through the system, the damage doesn't necessarily stop at one component.

Once the fuel system is contaminated, the repair can involve the high-pressure pump, low-pressure pump, injectors, rails, fuel lines, and even removing and cleaning the tank.

That's why these jobs become so labor-intensive and expensive so quickly.

We've seen several trucks come through recently after the wrong fluid or fuel ended up in the tank. Sometimes it's nothing more than being distracted at the pump and grabbing the wrong handle.

One small mistake can affect the entire fuel system.

Pay attention at the pump. A few extra seconds can save you from a very expensive repair.

DON’T REUSE THIS SEAL

Fixing the original problem is only part of doing the job correctly.

On a 6.7 Cummins, once you disturb the rocker box and valve cover seals during a repair, reusing those seals can lead to another issue later, especially a rear rocker box oil leak.

It’s something we see in the shop every week.

That’s why proper diesel repair means looking beyond the immediate failure. If a seal has been disturbed during the job, replacing it now can help prevent another leak and another trip to the shop a few months down the road.

Why Your VIN Matters

Two trucks can look nearly identical and still be built differently.

Single alternator or dual alternator. Different turbo configurations. Different fuel tanks: different trim levels, options, wiring, and components.

That’s why having the correct VIN matters when your truck comes into the shop.

The VIN allows our technicians to pull vehicle-specific build and service information so we know how that particular truck was configured. That information becomes important throughout the diagnostic and repair process, from identifying wiring connections to making sure we're ordering the correct parts.

Without the right vehicle information, something as simple as ordering the wrong component can slow down an entire repair.

Every truck is different. Proper diagnostics start with knowing exactly what we're working on.

More Information. Better Diagnostics.

A technician shouldn’t have to start completely blind.

“I hear a click when I turn the wheel” gives us somewhere to start. But knowing exactly when it happens, what the truck is doing, and what other symptoms show up can put our technicians on the right diagnostic path much faster.

That’s the purpose of our vehicle intake form.

It’s specifically for customers dealing with an issue that needs to be figured out, whether Southern Diesel Supply is the first shop looking at it or the truck has already been through multiple shops without an answer.

The more information we have about the symptoms, the less time we spend chasing unrelated issues and the more focused the diagnostic process becomes.

More information doesn’t replace proper diagnostics. It helps us start in the right direction.

Better Information = Better Diagnostics

“Lack of power” tells us there’s a problem. It doesn’t always tell us when or why it’s happening.

That’s why we’ve started using a vehicle intake form to get more detailed information from customers before we get deep into diagnostics.

When does the issue happen?
Only while towing? Under acceleration?
Is there black or blue smoke?
Is there a noise from the engine bay or underneath the truck?

Those details matter.

The more accurately we understand the symptoms and the conditions that cause them, the more focused our diagnostic process can be. That means less time chasing the wrong problem and a clearer path toward finding the actual issue.

Better information helps our technicians diagnose more efficiently and helps get the truck back to the customer sooner.

This is why proper diagnostics starts before we ever turn a wrench.
