Let’s talk roll cages! 🏁
A lot of you asked about my cage at Subiefest, so here’s a quick breakdown of the process I did if you’re planning one yourself.
Cage: Cagekits GD Subaru Rally Spec Roll Cage Kit
Installed by: Drift Cave Motorsports (Gilroy, CA)
⏱️ Timeline: About 1.5- 2 months total (order, delivery, install, prep & paint).
Install: I stripped the car beforehand, which saved time and money. Installation took about a week, and I had Drift Cave weld a custom dash bar to keep my A/C & heat controls plus had a few areas seam welded.
Prep & Paint: This was the most time-consuming part—about a week of 5-6+ hour days. Prep is everything. Clean with acetone, scuff the bars, and mask everything off.
Pro tip: Plastic the outside of the car—you’ll get way more overspray than you think.
I used 3-4 cans of primer, 8-9 cans of paint and 3-4 cans of clear. Leave the front windshield out and wear a mask, gloves, and eye protection.
💰 Cost: Expect around $7-8k at a minimum for the cage materials and professional installation. Seats & harnesses will easily add another $2-4k. Halo seats are highly recommended to help protect your head from the cage.
A couple more tips:
Acetone works great for removing overspray from glass, but use it carefully—it’ll damage paint. I also had the high-contact bars PPF’d to help prevent scratches and UV fading by Elite Auto Works (Granite Bay, CA).
Hopefully this helps anyone considering a cage! If you have questions about my setup or the process, feel free to ask below. 👇
