The "Chief’s Trumpet"
Before modern radio systems, fire chiefs used large brass or silver speaking trumpets to shout orders over the roar of the fire and the noise of the steam engines. Today, the trumpet (or "bugle") remains the symbol of rank in the fire service—the more bugles on a uniform pin, the higher the officer's rank.
