Allison, TorqShift and 68RFE. These transmissions live behind engines making serious torque, and that changes what goes wrong.

Slipping under load. Harsh or flaring shifts. Converter shudder at light throttle. Fluid that has gone dark or smells burnt.

Heat is what kills them, and LA traffic is very good at making heat. Stop and go means constant clutch engagement at low speed, which is exactly when airflow through the cooler is worst. Add a trailer and it gets worse fast.

Catch it at the symptom and it is a service. Ignore it and it is not.

If you have been coming here for years, nothing has changed except the sign.

LA Diesel Repair was S & S Diesel Repair. Same building on Beverly Boulevard, same people in the bay, same way of working.

The name changed to say plainly what we do and where we do it. That is the entire story.

If you still call us S & S, that is fine. We answer to both. πŸ’™ πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016

A diesel has no spark plugs. It ignites fuel with compression heat alone, and when it is cold there is not enough of it. That is what glow plugs and controllers are for.

Long cranking on cool mornings. White smoke at startup that clears as it warms. A rough first minute. A wait to start light staying on longer than it used to.

Those point at the glow plug system, and it is worth knowing that failures are often the controller or the wiring rather than the plugs themselves. Replacing eight glow plugs to fix a controller is an expensive way to not solve a problem.

We test which it is. πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016

If your truck spends its life in traffic on the 60 or the 5, this is for you.

A diesel particulate filter cleans itself by burning off collected soot, and that process needs sustained heat and sustained driving to finish. Stop and go congestion never gets there. Regeneration starts, gets interrupted, starts again, and soot keeps accumulating.

Signs: a regen message that keeps appearing, worse fuel economy, a truck feeling down on power, eventually a warning light and reduced power mode.

Tell us how you actually drive. It changes what we recommend. πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016

Four things worth acting on.

A whistle or siren that rises with boost and was not there before. Blue or gray smoke under load. Oil in the intake piping or the intercooler. Boost that builds and then falls off at the top.

Here is the part that matters most, and most shops skip it. A turbo rarely fails on its own. It usually fails because of an oil supply or drain problem, and if you replace the turbo without finding that, the new one goes the same way.

We look for what killed the last one. πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016

Rough running, a miss, low power, smoke. On these engines everybody's first thought is injectors, and injectors are expensive.

Sometimes they are right. Frequently the cause is somewhere else entirely. Low fuel pressure from a failing lift pump. Air getting into the fuel system. A wiring or connector fault at the injector rather than the injector itself. Compression on one cylinder. A sensor reporting honestly about a problem that is not its own.

Every one of those produces symptoms that look like bad injectors.

That is exactly why we test before we quote. πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016

Not everything we find on a truck needs doing today, and a shop that presents it that way is telling you something.

So you get three lists. What has to happen now. What can wait a few thousand miles. And what to keep an eye on.

Most shops hand you one list and let you assume all of it is equally urgent. That is how people either overspend or stop trusting shops entirely.

Your budget is real. We would rather work with it than pretend it is not there.

You get an itemized estimate before the work starts. Every line, what it costs, so you can decide what you actually want done.

That matters more on a diesel than on almost anything else, because the numbers are large enough that a surprise at pickup is a genuine problem rather than an annoyance.

No verbal ballpark that grows. No finding out at the counter.

Written first, then the work. πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016

Every generation below is work that comes through this bay regularly.

Ford Power Stroke: 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7. Including 6.0 head studs, EGR work and injectors.

Ram and Dodge Cummins: 5.9 and 6.7. Lift pumps, CP3 work and emissions systems.

Chevy and GMC Duramax: LB7 through L5P. Including LB7 injector replacement and CP4 diagnosis.

If your truck is on that list, you are in the right place. If it is not, call anyway. πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016

It is worth explaining, because a lot of shops say diagnostic and mean plugged in a scanner.

Bench testing means the component comes off the truck and gets tested on equipment built to load it the way the engine does. An injector gets measured for spray pattern, return flow and leak down. A turbo gets checked for shaft play and actuator function. A pump gets pressure tested.

The result is not an opinion about which part is probably bad. It is a measurement.

On engines where a single injector costs real money, that difference is the whole ballgame. πŸ“ž (323) 725-7016
