Drive safe at all times!

You'll need to watch your speed in school zones as six new traffic cameras are set to start clocking them next month.

The six school zones were selected based on crash history, engineering analysis and feedback from the community, police said.

Offenders will receive a $50 citation for a first violation and then a $75 citation for any additional ones, police said. Each violation also has a $15 processing fee.

Stay safe and alert.

The new year will begin with a number of major highway construction projects across Connecticut, including the continuation of the Route 8 Design Build.

The project, which began in spring 2024, will revamp a stretch of the highway with light fixture upgrades, roadway resurfacing, bridge rehabilitations and more.

It's expected to be done in 2029, and will affect Seymour, Ansonia, Derby and part of Shelton.

Editor’s note: This post has been updated to clarify that the Route 8 Design Build project has been ongoing.

What's the difference between a roundabout and a traffic circle?

From design to speed, there are some major differences that can have a big impact on roadway safety.

In a roundabout:
• Entering vehicles SLOW DOWN or YIELD to existing traffic.
• Traffic DOES NOT STOP, allowing higher volume of traffic.
• Circle shape keeps motorists BELOW 30 MPH.
• NO LANE CHANGES, except to exit a multi-lane roundabout.

In a traffic circle:
• Entry often controlled by SIGNAL OR STOP SIGN.
• Circulating traffic often required to STOP FOR ENTERING TRAFFIC.
• Vehicles enter at HIGH SPEED due to signal or stop sign.
• LANE CHANGES PERMITTED, which can lead to crashes when paired with high speeds.
