Monroe firefighters save baby, mom, from smoke filled home

Monroe firefighters saved a baby from a smoke filled home on Monday, Sept. 14.
At 11:43 a.m., the Monroe Public Safety Department was dispatched to the 400 block of Wadsworth Street for a 20-year-old woman who was reportedly having a medical emergency and experiencing difficulty breathing.
When Monroe firefighters and officers arrived, they discovered smoke was coming from inside the home, creating immediate threat to anyone still inside. Emergency personnel entered the residence and found the woman upstairs, unconscious but breathing. They also discovered a fire on the stove that had filled the home with smoke. Firefighters secured the fire hazard, got the woman out of the home, and started providing emergency medical care alongside Monroe Community Ambulance. They took her to the hospital, but according to Commander John Wall with the Monroe Public Safety Department, she has returned home as of Thursday, Sept. 17.
Firefighters didn't have any information or indication that anyone else was inside the home. After saving the woman, they conducted a search of the residence and found a 3-month-old, who Wall identified as the woman's daughter, alone in an upstairs bedroom. They removed the infant, who was unharmed, from the home.
"What began as a medical call had quickly become both a medical and fire emergency, with two lives at risk," said the Monroe Public Safety Department in a release. "Without firefighters' thorough search of the home, the infant may not have been found."
