Not all collision damage looks like damage. A bumper that lines back up after a low-speed hit can still have a cracked mount or a sensor behind it that’s no longer reading correctly. On a lot of late-model vehicles, that sensor is tied to things like automatic braking and blind-spot alerts, so “it looks fine” and “it’s working right” aren’t the same thing.

That’s why we scan vehicles before and after a repair and calibrate the safety systems back to the manufacturer’s specs. It’s not about padding the estimate. It’s about making sure the features you rely on actually do their job the next time you need them.

If you’ve been in even a minor accident and something feels off, get it looked at. Call us at 251-471-1777.

Getting into an accident is stressful enough without wondering if your car is actually being put back the way it should be.

That's a big part of what we do here at McConnell. When your vehicle comes in, we're not just making it look good on the surface. We follow the repair procedures the manufacturer lays out for your specific vehicle, which matters more than most people realize. Modern cars are built with crumple zones, sensors, and structural components that all have to be repaired a certain way to keep working the way they're designed to in the next accident.

So if your bumper has cameras or sensors behind it, those get calibrated. If the frame took a hit, it gets measured and brought back to spec, not just straightened by eye. And if you're dealing with insurance, we'll help you make sense of the process so you're not navigating it alone.

Quality work, done right, so your car is safe long after it leaves our lot.

If you've got questions about a repair, give us a shout. We're happy to walk you through it.

If your car has been in a wreck, there's a good chance it needs more than just body work to be safe again.

Newer vehicles are loaded with sensors. Lane departure, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, automatic braking. A lot of those sensors live behind bumpers, in windshields, and around mirrors. Even a minor collision can knock them out of alignment.

The repair isn't finished when the paint dries. Those systems have to be recalibrated to factory specs, or your car will be making decisions based on bad information. That's a safety issue, not a nice-to-have.

When we repair a vehicle here, we follow the manufacturer's procedures for every system that was affected. If it needs a calibration, it gets one. If it needs to be tested before it leaves, it gets tested.

That's what proper collision repair actually looks like in 2026.

If you've been in an accident and you're not sure whether your shop is doing this, give us a call. Happy to walk you through it.

Today we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the first responders, service members, and everyday people whose courage still shapes what this day means.

From all of us at McConnell Collision Center, we remember.

Modern vehicles take longer to repair than they used to, and it catches a lot of people off guard.

A fender bender that would have been a three-day job fifteen years ago can now take two weeks or more. The reason is what's underneath the panels. Today's vehicles carry radar sensors, cameras, lane-keep systems, blind-spot monitors, and adaptive cruise components integrated into bumpers, mirrors, grilles, and windshields. Any of those has to be removed, replaced, and calibrated as part of the repair.

Add in parts availability, insurance approvals on supplements, and refinish and cure times that cannot be rushed without compromising the work, and a realistic timeline gets long fast.

A shop that promises a quick turnaround on a modern vehicle is often skipping steps you'd want done. A shop that gives you a longer estimate up front is usually the one telling you the truth.

Even a properly repaired vehicle is worth less on the resale market after an accident. That difference is called diminished value, and in many cases, you can file a claim to recover it.

Here's the basic idea. A car with a clean history sells for more than an otherwise identical car with an accident on its record — even if the repair was done to OEM standards. That gap is a real financial loss, and Alabama recognizes it as recoverable in most third-party claims, meaning when the other driver was at fault.

A few things to know:

- Diminished value claims apply to the at-fault driver's insurance, not your own.
- Newer vehicles and lower-mileage vehicles typically have stronger claims.
- You'll usually need a third-party appraisal to document the loss.
- Insurers rarely bring it up. You have to ask.

If you've been in a wreck that wasn't your fault, it's worth looking into before you sign anything.

Before you hand your keys to any collision shop, there are a few questions worth asking. The answers tell you a lot about how the repair will go.

- Do you perform pre-repair and post-repair scans on every vehicle? The correct answer is yes.
- Will you follow OEM repair procedures for my specific make and model?
- Are your technicians I-CAR certified, and do you have manufacturer certifications for my vehicle?
- Do you use OEM parts, and if aftermarket parts are proposed, will I be told before they're installed?
- How do you handle ADAS calibration after the repair?
- What's your warranty on the work, and is it in writing?

A shop that answers these clearly and without hedging is one you can trust with your vehicle. A shop that dodges them is one worth walking away from.

Rental coverage is one of the most misunderstood parts of an auto policy, usually right when someone needs it most.

A few things worth knowing before you're in a claim:

- Rental reimbursement is a separate add-on. If you didn't specifically elect it, you likely don't have it, regardless of how comprehensive your policy feels.
- Coverage has both a daily limit and a total cap. A $30/day, $900 max policy will not cover a full-size SUV for a three-week repair.
- If the other driver is at fault, their liability coverage typically pays for your rental. But only once fault is established, which can take days.
- Rental coverage ends when the repair is complete, not when you pick up the car. Delays on your end come out of pocket.

Check your declarations page now, not after a wreck. It's a five-minute call to your agent. Because the more you know...

If you've been told your repair estimate went up after the shop started work, that's called a supplement, and it's normal.

The first estimate is written from what an adjuster can see on the outside. Hidden damage almost always shows up once panels come off: a bent radiator support behind a bumper, a cracked bracket under a fender, sensor damage that only surfaces during a post-repair scan.

A supplement is the shop documenting that damage and getting the insurer to approve the additional repair. It's not a shop trying to inflate the bill. It's the process working the way it's supposed to.

If a shop tells you the first estimate is the final number on a significant repair, that's the red flag, not the supplement.
