Isle of Man 🇮🇲 Racing History Lives Here!

Did you know the first “Tourist Trophy” was originally on four wheels not two? Beating the motorcycle version by two years it even changed locations before its demise.

“The four-wheeled RAC Tourist Trophy had lapsed since its last running on the Isle of Man in 1922, but thanks to a concerted effort from journalist Wallace McLeod and inventor Harry Ferguson the race returned in 1928 on closed streets east of Belfast, taking in Dundonald, Newtownards and Comber to make up the Ards Circuit - and the Ulster TT.”

Grand Prix legend Angel Nieto!

Ángel Nieto! The legendary Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle racer known for his thirteen World Championships and 90 Grand Prix victories, earning him the nickname "12+1" to avoid the number 13 due to his superstitious nature.

He began his career in the late 1960s, racing for manufacturers like Derbi and Bultaco, and became one of the most successful riders in history before retiring in 1986. Nieto also became a team manager and the head of a motorcycling dynasty, with his sons and nephew also following in his footsteps.

Sadly we lost him in 2017 at the age of 70 after a misfortune quad biking accident.

Isle of Man 🇮🇲 Motorcycle Racing History Lives Here!

“We love this image - at first glance it could almost be the cover of a LP record. It is in fact a picture of Douglas Pirie and ‘the gang’ outside the garage at Acacia House, Douglas in the 1930s. Doug Pirie was a London architect who started racing on the Island in 1929 and won Manx Grand Prix races in 1930, 1931 and 1934. Pirie died, aged 28, competing in the 1935 Lightweight TT. The race took place in bad weather. Pirie crashed on the mountain section of the course and the Ramsey Courier reported ‘D.J. Pirie’s death as a result of an accident in the Lightweight race is a poignant reminder of the risks attached to riding in the TT races. Pirie, as is known, was an old Manx Grand Prix rider, and he was a rider who spared no pains in ensuring that his organisation was as perfect as possible. Very few people will know that Pirie spent his Sunday evening in Ramsey perfecting arrangements for a system of signalling which is his own idea, and which gave him the advantage of knowing his position at Ramsey as well as at the start of each lap. lt was this system which helped him to win last year’s Senior Manx Grand Prix.’ One theory about the cause of his fatal accident was that his bike was too slow, causing Pirie to take unnecessary risks. Manx National Heritage was fortunate last year to receive a donation of photographs and written and printed material relating to Pirie, all of which can be accessed on iMuseum.”

We knew Skyler Goar got the roading racing itch from his foray into the the Irish Roads this summer but after helping fellow American Stuart Clotworthy at the Manx GP it’s now a full blown case and he’s ready for more!

“Wow, where do I even begin…”

“Since getting involved and dipping my toes into the road racing scene, I had an opportunity come up that I dove headfirst into. I got to be a pit crew member for a race team competing in the Manx GP around the famous 37¾ mile Isle of Man Mountain Course! It was truly one of those experiences where I had to keep pinching myself the entire time.”

“At the last minute, my mom decided to tag along, and it was awesome getting to watch her experience things that only true gearheads could dream of lol”

“The team as a whole had its ups and downs, as anyone does in racing, especially when you’re talking about the Mountain Course but watching the drive and perseverance to swap an engine over night so they can race the next day is truly only something you can understand in person. Multiple people on the team set personal best times, and everyone progressed throughout the event, which was awesome to be a part of.”

“Getting to prep the bikes and roll them out to the start line was truly bucket-list stuff for me. I met so many amazing people, had excellent food, great drinks, and loved talking to everyone we ran into. The island really is the best!”

“The end goal is to hopefully earn an entry into the Manx and get the opportunity to race around the best piece of road in the world myself one day. Taking multiple laps around the course every day makes you appreciate and respect it that much more. It also makes you trust the process and not rush anything: laps, laps, and more laps. Whether that’s in person, watching YouTube, or even playing the video game, you just need as many laps around that place as you can get.”

“Again, thank you to each and every person on the team for the hospitality and for giving me the opportunity to experience what I truly believe is the greatest event in the world. The people you meet and get to be around on a daily basis makes it all that much better. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, and hopefully just the beginning!”

“The island itself and all of the people on it are absolutely wonderful as well. Like I said great food and drink everywhere, the sights and history of the island is something you could dive into for days and days, the local folks are very polite to travelers as you show respect for the island and the way the island does things. Even for someone not into motorcycles is a great place to visit but of course s major bonus if your a bike enthusiast! “

We would say it was an epic week for Stuart Clotworthy…

“Manx Grand Prix Official and classicttraces went better than expected, went 108.5mph on the twin, 110.2mph on 600 and 111.5mph average laps on the classic Superbike, was on for 113mph when I ran out of battery at governors dip on the last lap, still managed an 86mph lap by pushing the big girl home to get a finish. Will just have to come back next year as I have unfinished business. Thanks to Dave Hewson for the fantastic machines!”

We definitely learned something new, we had no idea that Davida made suspension components before switching to classic styles helmets. Pretty cool!

Before helmets we made swinging arms. This is 1980, one of ours on a Kawasaki GPZ750, look at the box section and the eccentric adjuster. The big Japanese bikes of the day GS Suzukis, Hondas, Kawasakis, the Hailwood Ducati had a speed wobble at 120mph, bucking broncos, I do wonder if they were more dangerous than choppers. So we built the arms and mono shock conversions for all of them in the workshop on the Wirral, 15 minutes on a revolving welding fixture, powder coated, anodised, £100. Not a single one ever came back out of alignment.

The Japanese sorted their own frames by the mid 80s and we went and made lids. Same idea though, fix the thing the big boys had not fixed yet.
