Public service announcement: If your vehicle is equipped with lane departure warning or auto emergency braking, and you have had the windshield replaced, make sure these systems have been recalibrated.

The amount of windshields we run across getting replaced without calibration is alarming. Many times these systems take 6+ months to recognize they are out of alignment.

Every now and then we run across something that should be shared. This is one of those cases.

This vehicle is equipped with emergency automatic braking. Meaning, it will attempt to stop the vehicle automatically to prevent a collision. This system uses a radar mounted behind the front bumper of the vehicle to detect obstacles.

Notice in these pictures that the radar mounting bracket is bent so severely that the actual radar is pointed nearly straight down at the ground.

This vehicle has no fault lights on the dash indicating there is a problem with this system. There are 0 Trouble Codes in the vehicle scan. The vehicle has absolutely no idea that the radar is pointed down and will never see an object such as a stopped vehicle or a person in front of it. It has effectively made the Automatic Emergency Braking system completely useless with no indication to the driver that it is not functioning.

There are many things that can cause your safety alert systems to function improperly or not at all. Most of the time, you will get no warning on your dashboard to indicate there is a problem.

Recalibrating Lane Departure Warning on this 2019 Toyota Camry after it had a wheel alignment. Most manufacturers require this procedure but sadly it is ignored by most alignment shops. Modern vehicles have many great safety features, such as automatic braking, blind spot alerts, and lane departure warning. These systems all work together to keep you and your family safe.
