Bob and Morgan spent some time in the shop installing a brand-new engine in this 2022 Polaris RZR XP 1000.

We take you through the process of replacing the engine, getting everything hooked back up, and putting the machine back together with the usual amount of humor and shop banter mixed in.

It went wrong… Trail Mater Off Road Recovery

4 AM start. Top of the World. A broken machine. And one trail fix that almost worked.

I started the day before sunrise, fueled up the machine, and headed toward Dewey Bridge to take on Top of the World outside Moab, Utah.

Things got interesting pretty quickly.

Early in the trail, I came up against an obstacle that absolutely defeated me. After admitting defeat and moving on, it wasn’t long before I had a much bigger problem — I broke a component on the machine miles into the trail.

Turning around wasn’t exactly a great option, so it was time to get creative.

With what I had available, I put together a pretty questionable trail repair… and somehow, it actually worked.

At least for a while.

The temporary fix got me the rest of the way to the top, where I finally got to experience one of the most incredible views in the Moab area.

Then came the trip back down.

My trail repair finally gave up, leaving me with no good way to make it back to the truck. That meant making the call every off-roader eventually hates to make.

Thankfully, my friend Trailmater came out with a welder, got the machine put back together well enough to limp it off the trail, and saved the day.

Sometimes the adventure isn’t reaching the destination.

Sometimes it’s figuring out how the hell you’re getting home.

Bob starts the day with a snack stop at Jackass Joe’s Gas Station & Convenience Store, an alien-themed roadside stop that’s hard to miss — and supposedly even visible from space.

From there, he heads into Sego Canyon to explore the remains of the old Sego ghost town, walking through abandoned buildings left behind from the early 1900s.

But the history in the canyon goes back much farther than the ghost town. Bob also checks out the Ute rock art carved and painted into the canyon walls, giving a glimpse into the people who were here long before the mining town ever existed.

Snacks, aliens, abandoned buildings, ancient rock art, and a ghost town. This trip has a little bit of everything.

Funny moments with Peter on Dome Plateau Trail in Moab Utah

Bob and Dustin headed out for another day exploring the backcountry around Moab this time making their way to Big Indian Mine, Hog Farm Pond, and eventually Cameo Cliffs.

The day starts with a look around the old Big Indian Mine before they continue deeper into the desert to Hog Farm Pond. From there, they work their way through Cameo Cliffs and finish the adventure with a completely different perspective of one of Moab’s most recognizable landmarks looking through the backside of Wilson Arch.

It’s a side of the Moab area that most visitors never get to see: old mining history, remote desert trails, unexpected stops, and incredible scenery along the way.
