MONTANA'S NEW ENHANCED MOVE OVER LAW:
This year, legislators passed a law amending and improving Montana’s Move Over Law.

The enhanced move over law goes into affect
OCTOBER 1, 2023

Changes to the law include:

- Specific speed rules and verbiage pertaining to slowing down upon approach and passing of an authorized vehicle.

- The addition of Utility workers under the protection of the Move Over Law.

These changes create a clearer definition of a driver’s responsibility as well as include personnel from the Utility profession who routinely work along Montana’s roadways and require the same safety and room to work as other roadside professions.

Fines and penalties remain the same as does the charge of Reckless Endangerment to personnel in the event a driver fails to obey the law.

We all know the road conditions during the winter. Please slow down, and move over for our first responders. Help make sure they make it home to their families.
Thank you MHP, local Sheriffs department, volunteer fire department, EMTs and Montana Towing’s dedicated personnel who did their best that night to be there for people when they needed them.

⚠️⚠️UPDATE⚠️⚠️
According to the preliminary investigation, seven vehicles including two commercial motor vehicles, three passenger vehicles and two wreckers were involved in the incident. Six individuals were transported by ambulance to Missoula hospitals with serious injuries.

A westbound commercial vehicle was traveling too fast for conditions and collided with the dividing concrete barrier causing the vehicle to travel into the eastbound lanes where other vehicles collided with it. The two wreckers that were hit were already at this location stopped at another crash. These are preliminary findings as the investigation is ongoing.

Traffic is now flowing slowly in both directions. I-90 is expected to be completely open within the hour.

We are currently on scene investigating the incident. Multiple ambulances and first responders are traveling to and from the incident. Interstate 90 is currently closed on the Eastbound side. The westbound traffic will be starting to open slowly. First responders and Montana Department of Transportation are detouring traffic.
