Another cool project.

This is the Mrs’s boat.

Borrowed a friends Hurricane deck boat yrs down in E Coast of Fla IC and fell in love it!

They built a ton of them so they’re easy to find, andthe older ones like ours are lighter/faster than the newer ones.

This one is 19’ (smaller/lighter/cheaper to power) and had a Yammi 2 stroke 115 V-4 on it when we bought it and was great as is!

It only did 34 mph to start but I got it to 41.
(for free!)

Where we live, we are aways from the IC/Gulf so that boat is too slow for that distance/trip.

I want a 40 mph cruise, not WFO.

So I found what I thought was a really clean OMC V-6 GT 200 (225) for what should have been a really easy repower.

It wasn’t and it wasn’t!

Previous owners screwed up everything they touched, which was everything!

Worst I have ever seen.

But after 3 months of it challenging every step, it now does everything right on the hose and is only waiting on a break in our 95*+ weather to go to the ramp.

Funny thing is, the Mrs was fine w/the orig!

But, it got a new dash, gauges, trim tabs, 10” jack plate and 110 more hp’s

An addition to my V-8 project.

Still had the mocked up motor on a stand in the shop when this surfaced!

21’ Checkmate Starliner (open bow) w/a factory V-8.

Very, very rare!

I sold these back in the day and always thought they were the prettiest OB open bow ever built!

Our dealership had one w/a V-8 w/power steering and I had much time behind the wheel of that rig and always said I’d own one!

In that era, I had just quit racing kneel down but was still involved.

Convinced the boss to let me take it to the kneel down races in Dayton Ohio, (close to our shop) and use it for turn boat duty as marketing and try and sell it.

While between heats, us patrol boats were on a break, and I was bored.

Smiled at my buddy in the boat and told him to hold on!

I lit it up and started flying it around the turn markers on the oval course and was having large fun!

Until……., the race director came on the PA and said, “would the driver of the Checkmate please stop doing laps”!

This is my version of that boat.

It is a museum piece!

Started w/a Second Effort motor but p.head was replaced at some point.

I am currently going through it to make sure I trust it and will run it w/current motor then will dive into my V-8 project motor.

Runs 80 as is and should run 90 w/my motor when ready.

Hope y’all enjoy!

Finally got enough good parts to assemble my dream motor, a V-8.

In true FrankenRude tradition, it is the combination of 4 or 5, or more, motors.

it is a first yr ‘1985 (the heart of it) 8, but w/my home brewed gearcase, a set of unobtanium Second Effort dual plug heads.

These motors are so big physically that they need a proper hull.

On an STV, Allison, etc, a V-8 looks like a cartoon.

So I’m still looking for a proper hull.

I think it needs to be 20’ min but beyond that…., who knows.

Been watching for 21’ Checkmate Starliners but an ancient CV 21’ Glastron Carlson I/O converted to OB would be cool 😎
