I have yet to go hands on with an ecotec of ANY flavor that didnt have failed components in it. This is one of the timing chain guides. The top was broken off and both fasteners were about a thread away from catastrophe.

In my experience.... the timing chain setups in the ecotec family have a 100% failure rate.

Do yourself a favor, if you are at or have surpassed 100,000 miles..... HAVE THE TIMING SET UPDATED!!!!

ECOTEC rules to keep it running for years.

1. Keep the oil filled to the top, at all times.
Check it once a week and monitor oil loss/ consumption until you have established a clear pattern.

2. Keep the oil clean.
Ecotecs are very finicky and do not operate well with worn oil. Change your oil regularly, and more often than the manufacturer recommends. Contrary to popular belief, the "change oil" monitor DOES NOT monitor the actual quality of the oil.

3. Change the factory timing set at 100,000 miles, or immediately if you have surpassed 100,000 miles. Several aftermarket companies make a timing set with drastically improved components. I personally recommend Cloyes as they have complete sets that even include a new water pump for a few $100.

Follow these rules and keep that ecotec engine happy!

That 77 Ford F150, is actually probably one of the coolest things I have ever done. Hopefully I have enough before and after pics/vids to make a cool montage! This is one cool rig!
