Something different... I am selling the original molds from our upholstered a-pillar pods. This is an opportunity to revive the original product, or just own a cool piece of our history. We sold over 5000 of these over roughly 15yrs, but stopped in the last ~5 years of business because I felt like I had done enough. Demand slowed obviously, but the Mk4 is forever in my biased opinion.
Included would be 4 molds, masters, cutting templates, and fabric templates. I will also include all of my master a-pillars, fabric samples, thread, mold release, etc. In order to make them you will need a vacuum thermoforming machine capable of heating and drawing 3/32" ABS plastic. I may have a few pieces of plastic, but you'll need that too. If you are local I can sell you the machine. It's a DiAcro press I have upgraded and upgraded. Nothing fancy, very mechanical.
The molds are made from an industrial resin with an extremely fine sand media. Similar in feel to a bowling ball but able to handle the heat. They are attached to aluminum plates that sit inside the machine with standoffs for airflow (vacuum).
The process goes like this: order 16" square sheets of 3/32" ABS. Slide a sheet in the machine and heat until the plastic droops down ~3". Pop in the mold, raise it up into the melted plastic and hit the vacuum. The plastic is sucked down around the mold. Raise the heat, blast it with air to cool off, pop everything out. Let it cool, separate the mold and plastic. Rough cut the pod out with a band saw or snips, then slide the cutting template over and trace. Cut the final part out with the best aviation snips you can find. Drill the hole, deburr. Then, upholster.
If you're interested, please email me at [email protected]. I am happy to explain the manufacturing process further as well as assist in getting you setup (remotely).
I have no idea what to ask for these...
