❤️ Beebe L.O.V.E. Letter Honors Amy Lake! ❤️
Amy Lake is a float nurse in the Nursing Casual Pool at Beebe Healthcare and was recognized today for her intuition, compassion, and quick action to protect a patient in need.
While caring for a patient whose wife came to visit, Amy noticed a shift in his demeanor. A look of panic and anxiety appeared that had not been there before. She immediately reached out to the case manager and the workplace violence coordinator, and together the team calmly removed his wife from the room so Amy could speak with him alone. When she asked if he felt safe at home, he shared that he had been experiencing abuse from his wife and did not want her there. The team escorted his wife out of the building, and Amy connected him with resources for domestic violence survivors. She did all of this while serving as charge nurse, caring for her own patients, and helping move patients through a very busy emergency department.
The colleague who nominated Amy noted that this story shines an important light on domestic abuse. It is often pictured as men abusing women, or young people abusing older adults, but it can happen to anyone, and we should always look for the signs.
When Dr. David Tam, President and CEO of Beebe Healthcare, asked what made her realize something was wrong, Amy humbly explained that she is very in tune with her patients. She spends long stretches of time with them, and she and this patient had many conversations. She said she can read people pretty well.
Dr. Tam responded, “Reading people is one of the superpowers of nurses. Thank you so much for that.”
