In this and the next post, I’ll be presenting another comparison: which is better—a car from a more iconic but cheaper brand, or one from a brand that’s been forgotten but is technically superior?
I decided to break the usual rule and start with the "better" one. Here is the Mercury Grand Marquis—essentially a Ford LTD for those who didn't want the same badge found on police cruisers and taxis.
This particular unit actually bears a Ford badge because it comes from a market where the Ford Motor Company didn't officially offer the Mercury brand, but that doesn't matter—the key thing is that I’ve found two similar examples of these cars.
I’ve compared these models before, but back then I showed the Ford in its simple, rugged police-cruiser guise—the form in which it’s most commonly seen and desirable. Today, I’m taking a different approach.
This allows us to set aside the cultural aspect and focus purely on the cars themselves—specifically their appearance—since both examples feature the same 5,8 V8 engine.
I also managed to find both in the two-door body, this not only makes the comparison easier but also moves away from the iconic police cruiser and taxi image associated with the LTD. This Grand Marquis is a 1983 example. Here is the link to the ad:
