THIS WEEKS TRAILER TIP

If the dump-trailer battery is so low that the hydraulic pump only clicks, I would not count on a short drive to recharge it. The truck’s 7-way charge wire is usually meant to maintain/top off the trailer battery, not quickly recover a deeply discharged battery.
As a rough guide, assuming the truck's charge circuit is working properly:
- 60-120 minutes driving: may put enough charge in it to get some movement, but not guaranteed.
- 3- 5 hours: could provide a meaningful partial recharge.
- 8–12+ hours: may be needed to substantially recharge a deeply discharged group 24/27 battery through a typical factory 7-way charge circuit.
The reason is amperage. A dump trailer hydraulic pump can pull 150–300+ amps while operating, but many truck charge lines deliver only around 5 - 10 amps at the trailer battery, sometimes even less because of voltage drop through the long wiring.
One important thing with dump trailers
If you need to get the dump working today, you're much better off putting a real battery charger on it. Something around 10 amps will recharge it much more effectively than driving around.
Also, if this happens frequently, I'd check the truck/trailer charging circuit. With the truck running and plugged into the trailer, put a multimeter directly across the dump-trailer battery. You should see the voltage rise above its resting voltage—often somewhere around 13+ volts, depending on the truck's charging system.

🔧 TRAILER TIP TUESDAY 🔧

Before you hit the road, take a few minutes to check two simple things that can prevent a lot of trouble:

💡 CHECK YOUR LIGHTS
Make sure your running lights, brake lights and turn signals are all working properly. Don't forget to check the plug and wiring for loose connections or damage. Being seen is just as important as seeing where you're going!

🔩 RE-TORQUE YOUR LUG NUTS
Lug nuts can loosen, especially on a new trailer or after a wheel has been removed. Check your owner's manual or wheel/axle manufacturer's recommendations for the proper torque and re-torque schedule. Don't just assume they're tight!

A few minutes in the driveway can save you hours on the side of the road.
