Can you drive with a fluid leak? Maybe.

But that’s not the most important question. The real questions are: What’s leaking? How much has been lost? And how much fluid does that system need to operate properly?

We recently had a customer with a hybrid vehicle that was overheating on longer trips. The thermostat and hoses had already been replaced by the customer trying to solve the problem.

But those parts weren’t the problem. During our diagnosis, we found the transmission fluid was one quart low.

Doesn’t sound like much, right? The entire system only holds about four quarts. That means it was 25% low. Once we brought the fluid back to the proper level, the overheating issue went away. This is exactly why we say: don’t throw parts at a problem.

A leak that looks minor can have a major impact depending on the system and replacing parts based on symptoms can get expensive without ever solving the actual problem.

Find the cause. Verify the repair.

Can you drive with low coolant? The real question is: how low is it?

If you don’t know how much coolant you’ve lost, you don’t know how quickly your engine could overheat. If the engine is cool and it’s safe to do so, top off the cooling system with the correct coolant.

In an emergency, water can be used temporarily if that’s all you have available. Then keep a close eye on that temperature gauge. If the temperature starts climbing, stop driving.

Don’t risk turning a coolant leak into major engine damage. And remember: adding coolant doesn’t fix the problem. Coolant doesn’t just disappear. If the system is low, there’s a reason.

Get the vehicle inspected and find out where that coolant is going before a small leak becomes a much bigger repair.

Your body can’t keep going without the fluids it needs to regulate its temperature.Your engine isn’t much different.When your vehicle is overheating, continuing to drive it can turn a cooling-system problem into serious engine damage — and a much more expensive repair.If that temperature gauge starts climbing or you see an overheating warning, don’t think, “I can probably make it home."

Pull over somewhere safe, shut the vehicle off and have the problem checked.Sometimes the smartest way to save your engine is simply knowing when to stop driving.
