Matt at Gearhead Sales let us use his modified 7.3 with a T4 turbo swap to see if we could do anything to get rid of that off the line turbo lag.
T4 swaps are an excellent and popular mod to do to 7.3's, but are they really the BEST option?

Lapping valves is not rebuilding your heads. ๐Ÿ˜…
Jared at Kill Devil Diesel explains that lapping compound is a way to check valve contact and see where the valve is actually touching the seat.
It uses a very fine abrasive, which can help show the contact pattern, but it is not going to fix bad machining or replace missing material.
If the valve and seat are not shaped correctly, you cannot just grind them together and expect everything to seal. Like Jared said, you cannot seal valves by smashing mashed potatoes together.
The contact pattern tells the story. If it is not sealing all the way around, that head has a
problem.
Have you ever seen someone try to โ€œfixโ€ valve sealing with lapping compound?

How do I explain to the insurance company I have a 2003 truck with 05+ buckets and coils, 6.4 mirrors & tailgate, full interior from a King Ranch, a center console from a different truck, a 2008 front end swap, a 6.7 starter, etc..
What mods have you borrowed from another truck?

O-ring protrusion has to be right or it does not matter.
๐Ÿ“
Jared breaks down why there is a sweet spot when it comes to O-ringed 6.0 Powerstroke
heads.
Too much protrusion can cut into the gasket. Too little protrusion is not going to do its job.
KDD runs theirs right around .008"
, with every head leaving Kill Devil Diesel between .007" and009" More importantly, they keep each head pair and each end of the head within about .001"
That is roughly the width of a human hair, and it is the kind of detail that matters when you are
trying to keep cylinder pressure sealed.

breakdown!

Valve seat tolerance matters more than most people realize.
๐Ÿ“
Jared explains that one of the big differences with KDD heads is how tight they keep the valve
seat machining.
KDD only allows about .0005" of out-of-round tolerance on their valve seats. A lot of other
aftermarket heads can be closer to .002" or .003"
, which is a much bigger window when you are
talking about something that needs to seal metal to metal.
That tighter tolerance helps create a more consistent valve seal, better quality control, and a
better finished product leaving their doors.
KDD also uses bonded valve stem seals instead of the crimped style seals like the factory
setup. Instead of relying on a cheap ring to hold everything together, the seal is fused into one
piece so it cannot separate.
At high boost and back pressure, that matters. You need a seal that can actually withstand the
pressure instead of blowing off when the engine is working hard.
Who is running KDD heads?! ๐Ÿ‘€

Sometimes you just have to trust the process ๐Ÿ˜‚

Lapping can lie to you if you do it wrongโ€ฆ
Jared explains that when you are checking valve contact, the amount of compound matters
more than most people think.
Too much compound can make it look like the valve is sealing better than it actually is. Too little,
or doing the test wrong, can also give you a bad read.
That is why the process matters. You are not trying to โ€œfixโ€ the valve seat with lapping
compound. You are trying to see where the valve is actually making contact.
Cameron and Jared put the eBay heads to the test, and once they started checking the contact
pattern, it became pretty clear that these heads were not everything they were cracked up to be.
