From a 1960s Volkswagen Bus axle stop to the world's favorite dog toy! 🔧🐶

Back in the 1970s, Denver mechanic Joe Markham adopted Fritz, a German Shepherd who flunked out of the police academy for "excessive chewing." Fritz used to chew on everything in the auto shop—including rocks and car parts.

One day, while Markham was working on a 1960s VW Type 2 Bus, Fritz got a hold of a rubber axle stop that had been disassembled from the suspension. Fritz absolutely loved it, and better yet, the tough, bulbous rubber part didn't break. Markham spent the next six years perfecting the rubber composition and shape, officially launching the KONG toy in 1976!

I guess you could say Germans have always had a thing for quality engineering. 🐾
