A busy week for the first year class-learning to use precision measuring tools. Meanwhile the work continues and the upper clansmen are prepping for the annual job fair on 22 October.

It’s been a few weeks since I posted, but the students have not slowed down. MLR I is learning precision measuring, MLR II has been working to absorb the purpose, construction, and location of every brake system part, and MLR III has been learning electrical tools and symbols. Meantime, the work continues in the shop. Over the past couple of weeks, they have been processing two cars belonging to Midsouth Hope Garage-preparing them for delivery to families in need of reliable transportation. Both the Maxima and the Sienna got tires and brakes all around and basic fluid service. The Sienna got control arms and the Maxima got rear struts. The Maxima is now awaiting engine mounts and an AC compressor. While these two were being done, the students also did three sets of lower control arms, a few sets of brakes, and numerous oil changes. Crazy busy…just the way they like it!

The first three weeks have been busy. MLR I is learning about shop safety, safety data sheets, and program expectations. MLR II has been getting drilled on disc and drum brake system parts. As usual, the seniors are learning about the basics of electricity when they aren’t repairing our first twenty 17 cars. Their work has included two sets of plugs, two Odysseys with four-wheel brake jobs, tire replacements, TPMS sensor replacements, oil changes, lower control arms on a Pilot, rear uppers on another car, one Kia steering couple and more.

Just came back from Let’s Build It!, a professional development event for teachers put on by Harbor Freight and the Smidt Foundation. This will likely be the best PD we will see all year.

After a long, busy year of training, my students and I enjoyed a meal with some of our industry partners at Jim and Nicks BBQ. These are some of the hardest working of my students, responsible for repairing dozens of vehicles this year. We said goodbye to those who were graduating, and celebrated two of them who are headed for Nashville Auto-Diesel College this fall: Joseph Cunningham and Alexis Mejia. Both competed in the state SkillsUSA competition, giving up their Spring break. They received new Icon torque wrenches to add to their growing tool kits. Going to miss these guys!

Love teaching this in MLR I. The students maybe not so much, but when it’s over they can do long division with a decimal…without a calculator!

The last couple of weeks have been crazy with EOC testing making a mess of the schedule. The first year students were practicing tire repairs, mounting and balancing, and removing axles. A few were able to get their hands on some real world repairs-replacing shocks and struts, and replacing the leaking VVT filter on a Honda 2.4L. The upperclassmen were testing out on resurfacing drums and rotors, removing and installing drum brakes, and oral exams on brake system parts and operation. Meanwhile they got the chance to learn how to service electric trailer brakes.
