What are we looking at here?

That black circle to the right is the magnet inside the transmission pan. Its job is to collect tiny metal particles as transmission fluid circulates through the system. The clean magnet to the left was added for the photo to show just how much metal was built up on the other.

When the magnet is covered with heavy metal debris like this, it is a sign of significant internal wear.

This is one of the clues that tells us the transmission needs to be rebuilt.

These photos show damaged rubber seals caused by "leak fix" or "stop leak" products.
6R series transmissions are used in many Ford models from 2007-2020 including Transit vans, Expeditions, Explorers, F150, F250 trucks. This transmission had a leak that was not repaired properly. Instead, "leak fix" was added to the fluid which destroyed all of the rubber in the transmission. A leak that could have been properly fixed for a few hundred dollars turned into a transmission rebuild that cost several thousand dollars.

If your transmission is leaking, don’t try to band-aid the problem with "stop leak" products. Have the leak properly diagnosed and repaired before a small problem becomes a major repair.

A proper repair now can save you thousands later.
