October 15, 1901: The Metre Convention, which established the BIPM, enters into force. The Metre Convention is now signed by 63 countries and is the oldest scientific treaty in the world.

October 10, 1856: The first international conference on weights and measures is held in Paris, France. This conference led to the establishment of the International System of Units (SI), which is now the most widely used system of measurement in the world.

October 9, 1960: The General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) adopts the SI as the international system of units. The CGPM is the highest decision-making body for the SI and meets every four to six years to update and improve the system.

October 2, 1889: The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) is established in Sèvres, France. The BIPM is responsible for maintaining the SI and providing international coordination for metrology.

October 1, 2002: The kilogram is redefined based on the Planck constant. This was the first time that a fundamental constant of nature was used to define a base unit of the SI.
