BUYING A USED IRONHORSE - BUYER BEWARE!!!
Sadly, a used Ironhorse isn't always a GOOD Ironhorse. There are trashed 2 year old Ironhorse Trailers, and there are pristine Ironhorse Trailers that are 20 years old. and still going strong. They are all built essentially the same way, so it must be something about the way they are used, maintained and stored!
So what if you are one of the people who are searching for a GOOD USED IRONHORSE? There aren't many out there, and there aren't even that many ways to go about finding one. Here are a few of the ways and a suggestion or two to help you find a good one!
• If you see one, take a look. Is it shiny or dull outside? What is the date on the tires (2 digit week + 2 digit year) If they are more than 5-6 years old - BEWARE! Are there cracks in the fiberglass? Evidence that it was hit? Trim sticking out? Take pictures and send them to us. We'll provide an opinion about the condition, suggest what to ask and suggest a reasonable price range.
• Check FB marketplace, e-Bay or Craigslist. If you find one there, check carefully. Call and we will look at the listing, give an opinion about the condition, suggest questions and a price.
• Check Ironhorse Trailers Used FB page. We carefully vet any trailers we list and price them based on the condition and age. If you buy through this site, you will get a win-win deal.
So why are we writing this? Sad story! A person who lives fairly near our factory searched and searched and finally purchased a used Ironhorse from a Marketplace listing. He paid close to the asking price. If the trailer had been in decent condition, it probably would have been worth what he paid. He brought the trailer to us for what he thought was a little fix. When we looked at the condition of the trailer we were absolutely appalled--he paid at least $3500 more than it was worth! Worse still, to put this trailer back into useable condition will be another several thousand dollars--and even then, it will be cosmetically flawed. One call and sending us a few pictures would have saved him literally thousands!
Ironhorse Trailers are built to stand the test of time. Obviously the better cared for they are, the longer they last and better they work. But even an Ironhorse can take only so much abuse. So do yourself a favor and don't just assume that it is easy and cheap to fix up an abused Ironhorse--call to check!
