The City of McAlester is preparing for a significant winter weather event and urges residents and travelers to use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from noon Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, through 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026, with impacts expected to continue into early next week. Forecasts call for heavy mixed precipitation across southeast Oklahoma. North of Interstate 40, mainly snow is expected, with potential accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and blowing and drifting snow. South of Interstate 40, mainly sleet is expected, with 3 to 5 inches of sleet and snow possible. Periods of freezing rain may also occur, with higher icing amounts closer to the Red River. Cold temperatures are expected through the weekend and into early next week.
The City of McAlester Street Department has equipment and materials in place to respond as conditions allow. The City has approximately 300-350 tons of salt available for street treatment, along with salt spreaders, plowing equipment, and heavy machinery. Crews will respond based on roadway conditions and safety priorities. Pre-treatment is timed carefully to avoid materials being washed away by rain or wasted if conditions change.
“Our street crews are prepared and will work as conditions allow to make city streets as safe as possible,” said Interim City Manager Ken Wimer. “However, winter storms of this magnitude can make travel dangerous very quickly. If you don’t have to be on the roads, the safest choice is to stay home.”
Streets will be treated under priority levels outlined in the City’s Inclement Weather Street Clearing Map that is available on the website:

Priority 1 streets include Electric Avenue, Strong Boulevard, A Street, Wyandotte/Wade Watts Avenue, South Street, V. Hubert Smith Drive, and Peaceable Road near U.S. Highway 69.
Priority 2 streets include Ashland Avenue, D Street/Talawanda Road, Second Street, Sixth Street, Stonewall/Krebs Avenue, Monroe Avenue, Washington Avenue, Comanche Avenue, Kiowa Avenue, Seneca Avenue, Kiamichi Drive, Oklahoma Avenue, Hardy Springs Road/Ninth Street, Fourteenth Street, Seventeenth Street, Peaceable Road, Village Boulevard, Kinkead Road, and Douglas Avenue.
City crews focus on priority streets before treating secondary and neighborhood streets. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation oversees treatment of U.S. Highway 270/Carl Albert Parkway, U.S. Highway 69, Business 69/Main Street, and State Highway 31.
The City of McAlester works closely with Pittsburg County Emergency Management and thanks them for their continued partnership and coordination as this storm approaches.
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for possible power outages, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Those in need of warming options should consider available warming shelters as dangerously cold temperatures persist.
The City will continue to share updates as conditions change through official City of McAlester communication channels.
