I’m going to try adding a new element to the Opie’s Garage page. Road tested product reviews. I am foremost a mechanic, but my other passion is riding. Long rides to discover new places. I thought it would be cool to pass on what I’ve learned about motorcycle products as I go.
First up, the Oakley Meta glasses. I’ve been asked about these quite a lot. I purchased the black frame with transition lenses. I paid $383 and some change for them from Amazon. I have always supported Oakley, mainly for their commitment to our military and first responders. Great company in my opinion.
That being said, I rate these glasses at 4-1/2 stars out of 5. I got the transition lenses because I wanted to be able to wear them at all times and all lighting. The darkness range was comfortable enough to wear in the Utah desert mid-day and on the darkest nights with no light at all. The lenses themselves are tough and easy to clean. I caught many a bug and more cinders from the road than I care to think about and, as far as I can tell, there isn’t I scratch on them yet. The lenses are easy to clean. I used an alcohol based lens wipe and finished them off with the included microfiber cloth every morning before I left. The frames fit my head very well and don’t dig into my temples or my ears. That about does it for the “glasses” part
Now for the “electronic” part. The camera in these glasses is amazing. 95% of the pictures I posted on the trip came from these glasses and 100% of the videos came from them. (Haven’t seen them, like and follow my personal page on Facebook. Jeremy Strahl). With the location turned on I didn’t even have to remember where I was. The pics and videos get tagged with a location. The pictures almost simultaneously download to my phone with a good internet connection and I haven’t lost a photo due to storage issues. The battery will last a few hours taking photos and videos. It charges pretty quick when you put it in the case. You can charge the glasses 3 times with one charge to the case. I would put it in the case when I stopped for gas and to stretch my legs. It only went dead on me once and that was because I didn’t follow my charging routine.
The other awesome feature of these glasses is the Bluetooth connection. You can listen to music and videos through the glasses as well as make phone calls. The call clarity is terrific talking and listening. I called my wife every day during the trip and had long conversations.
There is an AI feature built in also. I haven’t explored it much because I’m a caveman, but I did ask it at every state what the local helmet laws were and it educated me.
The product information said the glasses are sweat resistant, but I rode with them in some rain and they did fine. I wouldn’t drop them in a bathtub though.
The only negatives I had that dropped them a half star were:
They look kinda strange and the frame choices are only 2 right now. I am sure Oakley will address that and more frames will be available soon. Until then, IMO, they’re worth the sacrifice in style.
The processor did lock up on me once and I struggled to reboot them. A YouTube video helped and I recovered.
My overall assessment. If you travel by motorcycle alone and like to take pictures, GET THESE GLASSES!!! Thanks for reading.
