ROK Sonoma Rd 1 Pro Shifter: With two drivers entering the shifter race this weekend, we were all excited to see how things went. Pro Shifter class racing this year at Sonoma has a mix of Vortex ROK engines and full race KZ powerplants.

Colin McGrath returned to racing after a year off. A former ROK GP Champion at Sonoma Raceway, Colin knows his way around the track and showed that even with 12 months off, he can still wheel a kart with the best! Running in a tight pack of drivers running 4th-6th during the first heat race, Colin showed he was not about to drive around casually to get back into the swing of things. In heat two Colin ran as high as 3rd place amongst some seriously fast shifter drivers >WAY TO GO COLIN!

We were watching Colin in the main, hoping for some more excitement, but the field spread out a bit more compared to the second heat race….and became a bit of a procession. But Colin stuck his sword in the sand this weekend showing the other drivers he is out for P-1. I, for one, can’t wait to see how Colin progresses this year in his shifter kart.

Yung Ko was our second Shifter driver this weekend. After 6-8 months of hard work practicing and testing, Yung was eager to find out where all that work put him in a tough field of shifter drivers. I was happy to see him hang in there all weekend and push to get faster and better. Which he did! With some more seat time this year, I hope to see Yung pressing the mid pack drivers and looking towards the front of the grid.

ROK Sonoma Rd 1-VLR Masters. Greg Cromwell jumped back in the seat of his 100cc kart and drove hard in both heat races, building confidence for a hard charge in the main event. Sadly, Greg didn’t even manage to make it through turn one. Another driver spun directly in front of Greg leaving him no place to go. Running over the other kart, Greg flew through the air and bounced back down to earth with an axle bending thud.(The video above) Sore ribs and a sad face were the result. On to the next race….

ROK Sonoma Rd 1- In Mini ROK, Fast Freddie Jr had a tough weekend. We all know they are coming some day, you just don’t want them to happen to you! Getting involved in a serious kart pile-up in the first heat bent the axle and had little Freddie very distraught. In Heat 2, Freddie Jr became the ‘meat’ in a kart sandwich entering Laguna and this time the wreck bent the steering shaft, tie rods and rod ends. BUT Little Freddie drove through the bent parts and still finished the second heat race! Way to go. Starting in the back for the final, Freddie found that special pace and wound up in 7th position, two spots above where he qualified. So CONGRATULATIONS to the little guy. Perseverance paid off!

Another nice day at sonoma. Croc Promtion Practice Sunday. Lots of KZ and single speed drivers... as usual for sonoma. Super thick fog turned into a beautiful day.
