LED headlights are yet another sign of human stupidity. A new study from the RAC in the UK has found that one in four drivers now completely avoids driving at night because of overly bright modern headlights. The remaining three out of four say they drive less after dark for the same reason. Despite the fact that around 40 percent of road accidents happen at night, many drivers report that the glare from newer LED headlights makes driving not only uncomfortable but sometimes dangerous.
Online discussions have singled out certain vehicles as the worst offenders, with Range Rovers and Tesla EVs often mentioned. Some Reddit users even described driving in the rain at night as “scary” because of the blinding reflections.
Experts suggest simple fixes, like flipping your rear-view mirror to night mode to reduce glare and making sure your own lights are set to “dip” when near other cars. Still, many drivers believe the issue has gotten out of hand and are calling for new laws to limit just how bright headlights can be. Better yet, stop using LED headlights, go back to using lights that are more orange-yellow vs blue, and turn down the brightness. As a driver of over 20 years, I used to be able to see much better driving at night until LED headlights became a thing.
