Willey's Tire Shop & Auto Repair - Marquette Family owned and operated since 1923...Check us out on Willeystire.com Willey's Tire Shop was opened in 1923 in Ishpeming, MI by Marcus Willey Sr.

Since opening we have had 4 locations in downtown Ishpeming. In 1951 it was handed down to Mark's oldest son Jim and was known as Jim's Tire Shop from 1951 to 1972. In 1972 we moved into our present location and the name was changed back to Willey's Tire Shop. When most of the boys in the family became teenagers, they all had a job at the store. They would work Saturdays and after school in the fall, sometimes staying to midnight during the busy season right before snowfall. In 1982 it was then sold to the youngest brother, Marcus Willey Jr. In 1992 we opened our newest store in Marquette, MI. It is managed by Mark's son Scott. Back in 1923 we were selling Federal tires that were made with cotton cords. Later cotton cords were replaced by rayon cords, then nylon and polyester. Finally steel belts were introduced in radial tires, just like the tires we sell today. We also seen wheels change, they went from clincher rims to tube type and finally into the tubeless wheels we use today. Balancing has progressed through years. At first there was no balancing, then it went to bubble balancing, and finally into computerized spin balancing we use today. In 1986 we started doing computerized alignments and have been upgrading our equipment as technology advanced through the years. Some of our employees have been with us since 1982 and others have 19 to 26 years of experience. Through the years many things have changed, we now have access to most major brand name tires, and many private labels. We still try to offer friendly small town service to everyone we meet. Willey's Tire Shop has been family owned and operated since 1923. We are located on Wright St right behind Target and just down the street from Arby's. We offer Tire Service as well as Brakes, Alignments, Shocks, Struts, and most front end work.

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to a little warmer weather this morning as it was 43 degrees. Another quiet and calm start to the morning with not even a slight breeze.

Traffic was heavy as usual heading to Marquette. One lane by the State Police post but no construction being done. Traffic was flowing smoothly this morning.

Ok...I am still on this penny pinching...save a few dollars kick and that was on my mind again. 2 things popped in my mind again as I drove to work....the furnace and the hot water tank.

Now I have a oil burning heater since natural gas does not run out to my house. My hot water tank is attached to the furnace. So to explain it as simple as I can...the furnace turns on and the water circulates through a pipe that goes into the hot water tank into the furnace. There is no actual heater on my hot water tank. I have a Taco Brain box ( not sure what it is called ) where I can stop the heaters in the house from working but the furnace keeps the hot water tank warm.

So here is my penny saving theme. My sauna too has a shower heated by a much similar system. It has a pipe that connects to an actual old hot water tank and the water circulates to and from the tank and gets heated by the pipe that runs over the fire from the sauna stove. When ever I burn anything in the stove...the water heats up and stays warm for days. So you can probably guess where I am going with this...I use the sauna shower a lot since it is basically free to use. During the week I pick up branches from the trees, bark, old pallets and I burn them to get rid of them....all while warming the water up.

Now I am coming to my Question of the Day !! The furnace....I always have this goal...I try to keep the furnace off until Oct 1st...many years I made it...this years...well I am ashamed to say I got cold the other night and failed....lol.

So the Question of the Day !! Do you find yourself trying to not turn that heater on until a certain day ?? Or another Question...do you have any tricks you do to save money on heating ??

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 32 degrees this morning. There was fog all the way from my house to Negaunee Township. Not a heavy fog but enough that it was visible all the way there.

Traffic was heavy again. Everything was flowing smoothly with no delays. A quiet ride again to Marquette.

This morning I had a thought running wild in my mind again. It is a long ride from my house to Willey's Tire Shop & Auto Repair - Marquette and it is dark and quiet as I drive...so my mind wanders a lot.

Today I was thinking of " sacrifices " I gave up through the years trying to save money. But in the end...I started thinking...were they really sacrifices ?? Did I really need them ??

Let me explain....There were many things I have changed through the years....but here is just a few that comes to mind...

The first thing that pops in my mind is...the telephone...

I was roughly 19 when I got my first apartment. I could not wait to get my own phone. I don't know...it was like a must need. Did you ever see the movie " The Jerk " ?? Steve Martin opens the telephone book and sees his name...I am somebody now...well I think I felt like that.

I could call people...order pizza...I had to have one. Years later...cell phones came out and I was not going to get one. My Dad actually got me my first cell phone...he said it was must for the business and I reluctantly carried it with me. Most of the time it sat in my truck.

Years later...and I mean years later I started using the cell phone more but kept the landline. I would get the phone bill it it would show last months phone calls....5 calls....$80 phone bill. For some reason I could not get rid of that phone...it was part of my life for so long I had to keep it. But...in time I finally got rid of it. I was paying close to $100 a month for an average of 5 calls.

Then...cable tv. I had to have it. It was great when the kids were young. They watched ESPN and Cartoon Network. Then as they grew older...they moved out and I found myself paying hundreds of dollars a month....for something I barely turned on.

To be honest I had Direct TV. They get you with these " Package " deals. I wanted HBO...so to get it I got a package deal with 100 other channels I don't know if I can honestly say I had ever turned on.

Then we got the little hobby farm and a lot of my time is spent outside. Yep, the tv would be on for background noise...but the amount of time I actually watched it...maybe a half hour a day...while paying close to $200.00 a month. You think I could just let that go...it was horrible...I finally called and cancelled it and the whole time I felt like my life was over....No...NO....I need my Direct TV....hahaha

We now stream free tv and if there is a movie we absolutely want to watch...well we stream it...usually paying like $5 to watch it.

Sometimes we have one our " Word Famous Date Nights " ( yep, Scott Sr. is ultra romantic.....if you listen carefully you can hear Terri laughing right now ) and we pay the 5 maybe 10 dollars to watch it and then...back to the live streaming and background noise...

So Today's Question of the Day !! Did you get rid of anything to save a few dollars that at one time you thought you could never live without ?? I have " tightened the belt " on quite a few things that at one time I thought I could never live without....but now I wonder why I took so long to do it...

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 31 degrees this morning. Once again just a slight touch of frost on the ground.

Colder days are coming !!

Traffic was heavy again this morning as I headed to Marquette. There is still one lane by the State Police Post but no construction was being done. It didn't hamper traffic though as everything was flowing smoothly.

So speaking of traffic...this thought popped in my mind and I have to share. Just a short story today....lol.

On my way home the other day I pulled up to the stop sign in Negaunee. My truck is a F250 so I sit up pretty high and I was in the drivers lane. I am stopped at the light and I can hear music blaring from the car next to me. Like I said, I am sitting pretty high and I look down and this young girl is sitting in there just a singing away....hand movements and everything. For a split second...our eyes met and I could see...she was instantly embarrassed...stopped singing...and turned away. As soon as the light turned green she took off...vroooommm

So....don't be shy...here is the Question of the Day !! Have you ever been caught singing somewhere in public ?? Terri has caught me multiple times singing away when I am working in the yard or even cleaning up the house....I am darn terrible...but I own it and keep going !! HAHA

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to another chilly 29 degrees this morning. The stars were shining bright and the skies were clear. Little patches of fog were once again formed over the streams, ponds, and lakes as I headed to town.

Traffic was once again heavy but flowing smoothly from Ishpeming to Marquette. Not a lot to report on the roads today...another quiet ride to work.

Today as I sat down I happened to notice my 2 doctors appointment cards. It has been a few years now since I ended up in the hospital for my lovely weekend stay....so I take this health stuff pretty serious. So I notice my 2 cards....one for my check up for my sugar problem and the other for the prostate. For some reason...I get this...I don't know uneasy feeling whenever I think of having to go to the doctors. I don't know why...but I freak out. I started to think...I wonder what is worse....going to the doctors or going to the dentist....Hey that could be a interesting Question of the Day !!

So...what in your mind is worse...going to the Doctors or going to the Dentist...mine...I would have to say Doctors.

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 28 degrees early this morning and there was frost. I actually had enough frost on the windshield that I had to warm up the truck a bit before heading to work.

Traffic was heavy but everything was flowing smoothly. One lane still by the State Police post and of course downtown Ishpeming still has roads blocked off with many detours. Overall a quiet ride to work today.

Well as tradition I always share my weekend adventures on my Monday posts.

This weekend...well it was a weekend of work...and I feel I need a day off from my day off...lol.

Saturday...after a busy day at work Pookie, Terri and I headed out to my Dad's camp to help him remove an old heating stove that was in the basement. Ok, this is a father thing...the stove has been in the camp since it was built. It hasn't been used in years since Dad got a propane furnace now. It has been tucked into the corner since day 1...well he wanted it out...and he almost seems obsessed with it...it needs to be gone now....haha.

Well it weighed a ton. Luckily my sister-in-law had a cart we could borrow...( Thank You Tammy if you are reading this ) and it helped a lot...but it was still heavy and awkward. We had literally centimeters if not less between each wall and of course one mistake would be putting a hole in the wall if not someone getting hurt. It seemed like it took forever to get it out. I don't know the last time it was used...and my Dad thought he got all the fuel oil out...but of course it leaked all over and my son got the brunt of it. Let's just say it was a very long ride home when all could smell was fuel oil. I actually took a sauna on Saturday ( hey...that is my Sunday tradition ) cause I couldn't get the smell off me.

Saturday night Terri had to work so I gave her a ride and my plans for the morning....a hay run !!

Sunday I got up early and headed to town. I picked up Terri and off we went on another hay adventure. We picked up the hay...of course a little chat fest with the farmer and headed back to the house. I unloaded quite a bit of it and then covered the rest for now with a tarp. We have to move some stuff around in the barn before the rest can be unloaded.

Terri was exhausted from not sleeping ( remember I picked her up straight from work ) so she went to take a little nap. She told me she needed some pallet wood for her next project. So a large chunk of my day consisted of me pulling pallets apart and pounding the nails out.

Terri woke up and then the fun started We had to trim some hooves...this is an adventure. Most of our furry friends are rescue animals and we are still learning how to take care of them...so all the internet videos we seen shows these guys rolling their pigs to their backs...the pigs just lay there...not ours...lol.

I had to wrestle them down, turn them to there backs and the whole time they screamed and fought me. Luckily we only have 4 pigs but 3 of them weight more than me and didn't understand we are trying to help them...in the end I won...I got them over...held them until they settled down...but until then...it was a fight. I held them and Terri trimmed all their hooves. Mission 1 accomplished...

Mission 2....failure....

Jack the Donkey and Toivo the Mule....we chased them all over trying to get their harnesses on them. After a never ending battle we finally got them on. We got Toivo cornered and finally contained him...but he wouldn't let us pick up his leg....darn guy was too strong and too nervous. Jack was worse and he is even stronger than Toivo so they were let off the hook for the time being...but we are going to continue to try to work with them before their hooves become a problem. I guess we have to build their trust a little more.

Later I cut some more firewood...by the end of the day...a sauna felt amazing but I have to say...I am super sore today. I guess I am getting older...haha

That was my weekend in a nutshell...there was more too it but it is already a little long for a Monday post.
