We had a family of four drive all the way from Colorado just to learn how to drift. The craziest part is none of them had ever drifted before... and they didn't even know how to drive stick.

But by the end of the day, they were doing stuff like this...

Honestly, nobody really knew what to expect, but in under 30 minutes, all four of them were holding donuts and linking figure 8s

Every student had their own car and their own instructor, so we could slow everything down and really focus on the fundamentals.

The wet track clicked pretty quickly, but once we got onto the dry, each driver had their own challenge to work through. And by the end of the day, every single one of them was linking the track and putting together full laps.

It's honestly hard to believe they showed up not knowing how to drive a manual... and left the track drifting ripping at 50 miles an hour and flying through tires.

This day was insane, so if you'd like to do this aswell, click the link in our bio

How long does it take to learn how to drift? Honestly… not long.

We showed one of our mechanics how to drift on his lunch break. Started him on the wet surface with handbrake entries, clutch in, quarter turn, big pull and once he got the timing down, he was holding the slide with throttle before he had to clock back in.

How long did it take you to learn to drift?

The hardest thing to teach most students isn’t technique, it’s learning how to relax.

When beginners first start drifting, they usually tense up immediately. They grip the steering wheel too tightly, stare too close in front of the car, and make sudden corrections because everything feels faster than it actually is.

That tension makes the car harder to control.

Once drivers learn to relax their hands, trust the self-steer, and stay smoother with their inputs (more throttle), drifting becomes dramatically easier.

The car responds best when the driver stays calm and controlled.

Beginner Drifting Basics

Look where you want to go. Your eyes lead the car. Your hands follow your eyes. The same concept as normal driving on the street

Throttle is required to drift.

More throttle = more angle. Too much throttle will cause a spin-out.

When the car starts to fishtail, release the steering wheel and let it self-correct.

From never driving manual… to proper high speed drifting in a few hours

This family of 4 came all the way from Colorado with zero experience, and by the end of class they were linking corners, killing tires, and fully hooked on drifting.

anyone can learn quickly with the right coaching

Fear is completely normal when learning drifting because the car is doing something that feels unnatural at first.

Most beginners aren’t actually scared of drifting itself, they’re scared because they don’t fully understand what the car is doing yet.

At Texas Drift Academy, we focus on reducing that uncertainty step by step. Students start in predictable cars, doing controlled exercises, and in slower environments while our coaches explain exactly how the car reacts and why.

As students gain understanding and repetition, fear naturally starts turning into confidence.

The goal isn’t removing fear instantly. It’s helping drivers feel more comfortable through consistency and experience until controlling the car starts feeling natural instead of stressful.
