The Working Boats of Southern California | Live to Tell the Tale
This is the other side of yachting and a side of the maritime industry most people never get to see.
Out off Long Beach, California, commercial crew boats and supply vessels are constantly moving back and forth between shore and the offshore oil platforms, transporting crews, equipment, tools, food, parts and everything else needed to keep these operations functioning safely and efficiently.
When most people think about life on the water in Southern California, they picture yachts, sportfishing boats, sailboats and weekend cruising. But just beyond the coastline is an entirely different marine world made up of working vessels, offshore crews, captains, engineers, mechanics and deckhands doing demanding jobs around the clock.
These boats are an essential link between land and the offshore platforms.
Think about how connected all of this is to everyday life. You drive your car, heat your home, receive deliveries and use countless products that depend on an enormous energy and transportation infrastructure. Behind that infrastructure are industries and people most of us rarely see.
That is one of the things we love about Catalina Crew.
We want to show every side of the maritime world — from superyachts in Monaco to commercial vessels working off the coast of Long Beach, from recreational boating to marine trades, offshore operations, ferry service, salvage and everything in between.
The ocean is more than recreation. It is an industry, a workplace, a transportation network and a major part of California’s economy.
And behind every vessel is a crew working hard to keep things moving.
Respect to all the mariners out there doing the jobs most people never see.
