Not all firefighter gloves are built for the same job.

While structural gloves are essential, many firefighters regularly perform tasks that call for different levels of protection, dexterity, and grip. From extrication work to technical rescue operations, having the right glove for the task can make a significant difference.

Our latest blog explores whether departments are providing all the gloves their crews need—and what to consider when evaluating your PPE program.

Do Departments Provide All Required Gloves? A department-issued pair of structural gloves does not cover every job a firefighter may face. NFPA estimates that U.S. municipal firefighters suffered an average of 20,480 nonfatal fireground injuries each year from 2020 through 2024, with

Are Expensive Firefighter Boots Really Worth It?

A higher price tag doesn't automatically mean a better boot.

The right firefighter boot comes down to fit, protection, comfort, durability, and how it performs on the calls you actually run. In some situations, a premium leather boot makes sense. In others, a rubber boot may be the better choice.

Before your department spends hundreds of dollars per pair, make sure you're looking beyond the sticker price and evaluating the total value over the life of the boot.

✅ Leather vs. Rubber
✅ Long-Term Ownership Costs
✅ Fit & Comfort Considerations
✅ Maintenance & Service Life
✅ What Departments Should Consider Before Buying

Firefighter boots are not regular work boots.

They are life safety gear.

NFPA estimates that U.S. municipal firefighters suffered 53,575 line-of-duty injuries in 2024, with 30 percent occurring on the fireground.

That is exactly where boots face heat, water, sharp debris, falling objects, slick surfaces, chemicals, and hours of hard use. The wrong boot can slow a firefighter down, increase fatigue, affect movement, and create real risk if it fails during a call.

Departments should evaluate boots based on more than price. Fit, weight, traction, moisture control, heat protection, durability, and long-term cost all matter.

At Hunter Apparatus, we help fire rescue teams, EMS agencies, and industrial fire departments compare options, review specs, coordinate sizing, and choose gear that fits the mission.

Boot selection is not just a procurement decision. It is a crew safety decision.
