A little BD present to myself. Picked up a ‘72 Yamaha R5 (RD350) for $120 from Johnny’s Vintage MC Akron. Mostly they specialize in KZ900 restorations. Got a few pics of the shop and the really rough R5. It looked like it was laying on its left side in a field for many years. As it turns out, it was used in the Kamikaze Jumps in Ashland, OH and pulled from the bottom of the lake after it was jumped! The goal is to ride it before summer. Either this or the KZ750B, another vintage project. Will update!

Update on one of the barn find Z50’s (1984) it was in far worse shape than the ‘78. It was missing exhaust, all bodywork, fenders, gas tank, seat, carb, controls, even handlebars and top triple clamp was missing. Transmission was locked up. All electrical was missing, rims were rusted completely through, tires dry rotted. Chain seized and sprockets trashed. I’ve had fun putting Amazon parts on it (throttle, grips, kill switch, carb, air filter, fenders & gas tank. Seat was from Glens surplus. Iron pony for the chain & sprockets, tires, and OEM gaskets. The 1978 was 99% complete. It was missing the lights, and a few brake parts. The tubes held air and it just needed a carb clean and piston / cylinder and it’s done. If you look carefully you’ll see in the background the new project a 1998 Z50! Picked it up in Amherst last Tuesday, was excited to meet another collector and he threw in a lifetime supply of parts, even a Chinese quad and a weed eater (was doing some spring cleaning). Last fall when I rode the ‘78 for the first time I enjoyed the challenge of the 50cc (not a lot of power but manageable with gear selection and RPM’s) once I got “adult” handlebars on it, then I could actually steer it and son of a nutcracker that was so much fun on my minibike track in the woods!!! Looking forward to mid-Ohio vintage weekend this year, my goal is to have 4 pit bikes ready for that event. Not to race but to just ride around non-stop and have fun with friends.

More “FUN” projects! Old man Ben picked up this once fully chromed but now rusty minibike with a mint condition seat! We’re going to install a Robin OHV slant cylinder engine, fired it on carb clean. We ordered a new carb, old one was pretty bad. Should be riding it by next week. And for the red Z50…. After installing 5 different coils I finally realized that points must have their own coil, I installed one from a similar model (CT70) and solved that mystery. It now runs, but wouldn’t go into gear. Pulled the engine and took the clutch cover off thinking it was shift detent. Detent was fine, but The shift drum was frozen. On the left side case there’s a rubber plug. Under that plug is a bolt and washer that goes into the drum. The rubber plug had allowed water in and rusted the washer and bolt to the drum. Removed & cleaned now it shifts nice snd smooth. Sadly I’ll be waiting on the clutch cover gasket now. The gas tank, fenders, carb, air filter, brake cable, grips, twist grip & cable, kill switch, steering nut all were Amazon parts! The seat and rear shocks were Glens Surplus parts. Handlebars off an old Kawasaki street bike. Handlebar clamps off a Honda ATV. (Stock bars on this ‘84 model are not adjustable and impossible to steer with) exhaust is a GP style Z50 exhaust I had laying around (not good for off road no ground clearance) Bill at B&B gave me the stock seat and shocks which will end up on it eventually. Seat will need completely redone and I fear that the rear shocks might be too soft. I want the two Z50’s I have to be pretty close to the same so it will be a friend challenge bike on my minibike track in the woods. Maybe Lap times 😅 or a hill climb bike for Jamie’s broke-foot impossible hill climb 😂 possibilities are endless. Ultimately seeing all the thousands of people at Mid-Ohio on minibikes inspired me so here we go we no longer have to be spectators we can be participants. Z50’s are a challenge to ride - lack of power makes gear selection priority! If there’s a hill you better have a game plan!

BARN FINDS!!! 1978 Z50 (near complete) 1984 Z50 (engine wheels frame) and a 1959 CT50(I think it’s a CT)
1959 missing valve cover and kick shaft broken off, rims rusted through it’s in real bad shape.
1978 Z50 chain froze, missing front brake parts, points not opening (no spark) and someone mushroomed the end of the crank trying to get the rotor off without the puller, low compression, carb gummed up but clean tank, rear brake frozen, tires flat.
1984 Z50 besides the missing parts, rims rusted through, super low compression 50PSI, and trans seems funky may be mis-adjusted clutch or something.

1959 being sold for parts. 1978 everting has been fixed & replaced, it’s all there now, and the cylinder/piston is on order. 1984 is now a parts bike.

$150 barn find! Just rode it for the first time!

Addendum: Originally contacted the owner to buy the engine only for $120. When I got there it was complete minus left rear plastic and front end. I offered $150 (what I had left in my wallet) for the whole thing. He thought about it and accepted. Hooked a chain around it with his front end loader and put it in my truck. I also bought a ‘86 TRX200SX off him, will post later about it. So turns out this guy is a collector & is trying to raise some money to finish his ATC250R and Kawasaki Tecate. My buddy Sean donated an ATC110 front end (they had no shocks & no front brake from the factory) but hey it’s free! The front tire that was on it was almost split in two because the dry rot was so bad (that was fun to remove from a split rim). Then I had to seal the split rim and got the new / old ballon tire 22/11-8 to bead up but air escaped thru the dry rot. So I found a tube at Glen’s for $20. Forks are slightly bent I plan to straiten them later, just wanted a rolling chassis right now. On to the engine. Carb smelled like fairly new gas so I put some fuel to it and pull started it. No luck. Cleaned carb & re-tried. No luck. Checked spark, had spark, champion plug gap looked like someone dropped the plug on the ground, swapped a NGK in & re-tried. Didn’t start. Pulled the plug checked compression. 130 PSI on a 40 year old engine. Not bad. We noticed it was pretty noisy when the engine was rotating with the pull start. Pulled the mechanical advance cover and springs and cam pin fell out. One of the mechanical arms wasn’t even attached, it just laid there in the cover. Unfortunately the pin falling out wiped out the cam. I had another complete ATC200 head in the shop. I was able to keep the engine together in the frame and head on and swap out the cam and mechanical advance. Pulled once, nothing. Twice & fired once. Third pull nothing. 4th pull it fired up and idled like it was 1982 and just rolled out of the crate at the dealer! I was so excited I put a little more fuel in the fuel line and rode it three loops in the parking lot before the fuel line ran out of fuel. Pulled it into the shop and changed the oil and adjusted valves. I plan to ride as is. Adjusted rear brake, need to check drive chain and tighten rear hub nuts. Long term goals are to find the left rear plastic and correct ATC200 front end with the proper shocks and drum brake. If money wasn’t an issue I would get new balloons but these aren’t too bad. Hand brake cable is froze and I want to see if a ultra sonic cleaner can free it before I spend money on a cable. Still have the brake pedal working good. Cool things to note it had the Honda line hitch and some of the tools were still in the tool kit. Electrical was untouched. Still had the pull start decomp. The rear end covers & chain cover were all there. (A first for me on 200’s. When I first moved to Ohio I put up an ad on Craigs that I was looking for ATC’s and a guy in Seville, OH gave me an ‘83 200 for free (I think this one is an 83 as well) but his was more complete but engine was completely dismantled. Had a broken shift shaft (he included the new OEM shift shaft and crappy Chinese gasket set. I just put in one of my AOR (Arizona Off Road) engines and have been riding it since.

It’s been Ez goin with this Ezgo golf cart engine rebuild, crank is out, repaired, two new valves, honed the cylinders, and replacing the rod and repairing the crack in the cases. Cause of death: when you buy a Ezgo you can upgrade to a low fuel light and an engine oil light. This cart was the base model with no oil light.... And Kaboom! What could possibly go wrong at 15MPH?! 😂

Just changed the tracks & control cables on the Bobcat. Lifting that 300lb. rubber floppy track onto the front sprocket was fun... and at the shop I am working on Payne’s 1979 Vespa (really great shape for it’s age) and you can see Jeremiah Kristi Jeremy Shrimplin’s bike on the lift, won’t be long until we are back on the road!
