🌊 The Manistee River: One of Northern Michigan’s Greatest Treasures 🌲🎣

The Manistee River is one of Michigan’s most iconic waterways—and one of the finest trout rivers east of the Rocky Mountains.

Here are a few fascinating facts:

📍 It begins near Mancelona Township and winds nearly 190 miles before emptying into Lake Michigan at the City of Manistee.

🗺️ Along the way, it flows through seven counties and passes near communities like Mancelona, Mesick, Wellston, and Manistee.

⚡ The river is home to two hydroelectric dams—Hodenpyl Dam and Tippy Dam—which also provide popular recreation areas.

🪵 In the 1800s, the Manistee served as one of Michigan’s busiest logging highways, carrying millions of white pine logs downstream to sawmills that helped build cities across the Midwest.

🎣 Today it’s known for outstanding fishing, with species including brown, brook and rainbow trout, Chinook and coho salmon, smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and even lake sturgeon.

🚣 The river is also a favorite destination for canoeing, kayaking, tubing, hiking, camping, and wildlife watching. Every fall, thousands of salmon and steelhead return to spawn, attracting anglers from across the country.
