Meet Brian Newbold.

This photograph shows Brian aged 21 with his 1962 Jaguar Mk2 3.8 Manual Overdrive - a car he still remembers fondly more than 50 years later.

"I bought it in 1970 for around £300 from a mate at work, partly funded by a loan from my mum. Third party fire & theft insurance was £60! I was earning £26/week as a welder."

For a young man in his early twenties, a Mk2 3.8 wasn't an everyday sight.

"Even at 21 I looked young for my age and got stopped by the Plod regularly. My Dad, who never drove or owned a car, thought I was mixing with some dodgy people by buying a Jag."

Brian kept the car for around three years before replacing it with a more economical Mk2 Cortina GT, but it's never been forgotten.

Alongside an Aston Martin he once owned, the Jaguar remains firmly on his "I wish I'd kept it" list - although, as Brian admits, a little rose-tinted nostalgia may be involved. This is the only photograph he still has of the car: Aged 21. Feeling, in his own words, like the King of the Road.

We recently came across this original Jaguar E-type advert, inviting readers to simply "Capture a Jaguar."

It doesn't waste time on modesty either. The copy calls the E-type "a glorious thing to have and to hold," and doesn't stop there, adding that it's "no ordinary motor car."

Poetry might be pushing it. Then again, this is a car the Museum of Modern Art once cited for excellence of design, so maybe the advert earned the right to get carried away.

Sixty years on, the E-type still gets people reaching for words like these... and our design team worryingly excited about that font :/

Happy National Day of Motoring!

However you choose to mark it, we hope it involves a Jaguar.

Whether it's a long-awaited road trip, an early morning run on your favourite B-road, or simply taking the scenic route home, today is a good reminder that these cars were built to be driven.

Some of the best journeys are the ones with no real destination.

Roads don't get smoother. Shocks and springs don't get better with age.

More body roll through corners. Less control over crests and dips. Until your Jaguar stops feeling like itself.

Worn dampers cost you more than comfort, they cost you confidence. We stock shocks and springs for classic & modern Jaguar models, standard and uprated options.

At first glance, the Daimler 250 V8 and Jaguar Mk2 are almost impossible to tell apart.

The bodywork is largely the same, but beneath the surface they took very different approaches. While the Mk2 used Jaguar's familiar straight-six, the Daimler was fitted with its own 2.5-litre V8, giving it a distinctly different character on the road.

The Daimler wasn't a Mk2 with a different badge, nor was it a V8 muscle saloon. Instead, it developed a reputation for effortless cruising and silky-smooth performance.

For many enthusiasts, it's what's under the bonnet that sets the two apart, but look closely and you'll also spot the fluted Daimler grille and boot trim.

It's a reminder that some of the most interesting classic cars aren't defined by how they look, but by how they feel.

There's a particular sound a classic Jaguar should make. Most owners know it instinctively.

With decades of heat cycles, older exhaust components start to suffer. At first, it's subtle, but by the time you're aware, the damage is done.

SNG Barratt stocks components and complete exhaust systems for classic Jaguars. One section or the whole thing, the parts are here.

The Mark 2/II gets called a gentleman's express so often that the phrase has lost all meaning. What it actually is: a genuinely small car by modern standards, narrower than most hatchbacks, with a driving position that puts you close to the glass on all sides.

Three engine options over its run, 2.4, 3.4, 3.8, and the difference is real. The 2.4 is the quiet one of the three, hiding its weight nicely through corners. The 3.8 has the reputation and the torque to back it up, though the twin SU carbs reward a bit of patience.

Inside, the wood isn't veneer for show. It's proper timber that ages and marks with use, building character the longer you live with it. The leather seats do the same, developing their own patina rather than staying showroom-perfect.

One detail people skip past: the rear track is narrower than the front, which gives the handling a slightly lively edge under load that owners tend to grow fond of.

Front disc brakes arrived partway through production. Drive an earlier 2.4 without them and you notice the difference every time you need to stop in a hurry.

Which engine would you pick, and why?

Jaguar had been building towards this for a long time.

This teaser poster from early 2014 announced the F-Type Coupe to the world with a date, a Union Jack, and a hashtag: . The date was no accident. Jaguar had bought a slot in Super Bowl XLVIII, and on 2nd February 2014 a television audience of roughly 111 million people watched Ben Kingsley, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Strong make the case that the best villains are always British. The F-Type Coupe was the punchline, and it was a good one.

The roadster had arrived in 2013 to strong notices, but the Coupe was the one enthusiasts had really been waiting for. Stiffer, sharper, and visually more resolved, it wore that long fastback roofline in a way that drew inevitable comparisons to the E-Type without ever trying to imitate it. The R variant, with 550hp from a supercharged V8, was frankly excessive in the best possible way.

What this poster does well is trust the image. White car, dark background, distressed Union Jack. No specification, no pricing, no explanation. Just a date and a question the car would answer for itself at the Detroit Motor Show two days later.

A confident piece of launch marketing from a brand that had rediscovered, after some difficult years, exactly what it was supposed to be.

Introducing Staff Picks.

Every fortnight, we'll be asking members of the SNG Barratt team one simple question:
If you could own any Jaguar, which one would you choose... and why?

"If I could have any Jaguar in my garage, it would be an XJ6 Series 2 Coupé. I've always thought it's one of the most elegant cars Jaguar ever produced. The pillarless windows, long bonnet and sweeping roofline give it a unique presence, while still retaining all the comfort and refinement that made the XJ such a success. It's rare, beautiful and unmistakably Jaguar."

The XJ-S never pretended to be democratic. Its ads practically smirked: "Designed for a few bold drivers who remember what twelve throbbing cylinders can do for the soul." That's not gentle persuasion, it's a challenge thrown across the table.

Further down came the line that still gets us: "Somewhere beyond necessity there is a bright realm of pleasure." In a 1983 brochure. For a GT car. Whoever wrote that was having far too much fun, and they earned it.

The pitch wasn't wrong, though. Nobody needed a V12 grand tourer with 262 HP and a cabin wrapped in leather and burr elm. That was rather the point. The XJ-S existed for drivers who weren't going to apologise for wanting something extravagant.

Forty-odd years on, the survivors still feel exactly like that. Small, slightly impractical pleasures that keep their owners quietly obsessed.

Which line from an old car ad has stayed lodged in your head longest?
