Back then, nobody bragged about the factory stereo.

The first thing most of us wanted to know was...

"What are you putting in it?"

A Pioneer head unit.

New speakers in the doors.

Maybe an amp if you had enough money.

If you were really serious, you started measuring the trunk to figure out how many speakers you could squeeze in without your parents noticing.

Half the fun wasn't even listening to music.

It was spending an entire Saturday in the driveway with the doors open, the dashboard taken apart, tools scattered everywhere, and one friend insisting he knew how to wire everything because he'd "done it before."

Somehow there were always three extra screws left over.

Nobody cared.

The moment that cassette slid in and both speakers came alive, it felt like you'd just upgraded the entire car.

Looking back, it's funny.

The car itself barely mattered.

We were all chasing the same thing.

The perfect soundtrack for the next drive.
