"My air conditioning isn't working!"

There's 3 reasons your car's AC system isn't producing cold air:
1. The refrigerant level is low.
2. There is an electrical failure.
3. There is a mechanical failure.

So how do we determine what needs to be fixed?
First of all, a visual inspection is done. This can find simple things like a missing serpentine belt, obviously damaged components, or gross leaks in the system.
If we can't see anything obvious, we need to recharge the system.
"But I just added a can of refrigerant from the parts store!"
In order for the AC system to function properly, it needs a precise amount of refrigerant in the system. The only way for us to know how much refrigerant is in the system is to remove it and weigh it. We then add the correct amount back in and add some fluorescent dye to help spot leaks and then test the system. If it works, great! But we're not done, we still need to check for leaks! Sometimes we can see them shortly after adding the dye, but other times it takes a while for the dye to escape the system. If the AC still doesn't blow cold air, we need to do some additional testing to determine if the issue is electrical or mechanical and what exactly failed.
