1999 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner. Water pump replacement.
This customer finally approved the repair, and the inspection confirmed exactly what was causing the problem.
The water pump bearings had completely failed.
Coolant was leaking from the weep hole, and the timing belt had gotten to the point where it was slipping across the seized water pump pulley instead of driving it properly. We also found evidence that stop leak had been added to the cooling system at some point.
Stop leak might buy you a little time in an emergency, but it won't repair worn bearings or a failed mechanical seal. When a water pump fails, replacing the failed component is the proper repair.
Problems like this are exactly why we believe in diagnosing before replacing parts.
A coolant leak or a noisy water pump can quickly turn into an overheating engine if it's ignored. Catching the problem early can often save thousands of dollars in unnecessary engine repairs.
Every vehicle that comes through our shop receives a thorough inspection so we can show you what failed, explain why it failed, and recommend the repair that actually fixes the problem.
