Should Newer, Better Tires Be Installed On The Front Or The Back Wheels?
If you have two tires with tread life remaining, and two that are toast and need replacing, the better tires should be installed on the back of the car – across the rear axle. The older tires with life remaining should stay at the front of the car, or be rotated up to the front when the new tires are mounted.

Why should the newer/better tires be installed on the back wheels?
Tires provide the most traction in hazardous road conditions (wet, slushy, snowy) when they are new, and have full tread depth. By placing the newer, better tires on the rear of the car, we're maximizing the control and traction available at the rear wheels and keeping the rear of the car as stable and planted as possible.

For most typical, everyday drivers, a loss of control at the rear axle isn't something that’s easily managed. A loss of traction at the rear of the vehicle often results in a spin, and/or an unwelcome off-road adventure – while if the front tires “wash out” due to a temporary loss of traction, driver intervention isn't generally as urgent, or quite as difficult.

You might be thinking, deciding which end of the car I want to have maximum control of isn't particularly appealing. We hear you.

If you do regular tire rotations and the vehicle is properly aligned, then tire wear should be pretty even for all four tires. However, in many cases people don’t keep up with these tire services, which means they may need to replace two tires at a time. Since most of us don’t want to “waste” tire life and unnecessarily spend money on two additional tires, the choice of where to put the new tires comes up.

If the remaining tread on the two usable tires is minimal, we recommend that you replace all four tires. With this fresh start, commit to regular tire pressure checks, tire rotations, and vehicle alignments and you’ll be able to make the most of your new set of tires.

The sudden illumination of the dashboard “check engine” light while driving can strike fear and dread into even the most seasoned driver’s psyche. But it doesn’t have to. This indicator light’s purpose is simply to alert the driver that a problem in one of the vehicle’s systems has been detected, and that further investigation and diagnosis are needed. The cause could be something as minor as a loose gas cap, or something more complex and serious. Regardless, what’s important to remember is that the light shouldn’t be ignored, because in all likelihood, it’s not going away.

The Check Engine Light Just Came On, Now What?
by Rich Ellis

What is it?
Today’s sophisticated vehicles rely on a computerized engine management system – which includes the check engine light – to monitor and control a wide variety of vehicle functions and systems. Some vehicles had on-board computers as early as the mid 1970’s, but it wasn’t until 1996 that vehicle manufacturers were required to include Onboard Diagnostics (OBDII) systems to generate vehicle troubleshooting data that was standardized across the industry.
What it means
The check engine light illuminates when the OBDII detects a problem, and it usually won’t turn off until the problem is fixed or the system is reset by a service technician. In most vehicles, the check engine light will do one of two things – flash or remain solid. A solid or steady light indicates a problem that needs to be diagnosed in the near future, but you can continue driving. A flashing light is more serious. It means there’s a problem that needs to be investigated immediately, and that if the vehicle continues to be driven, more serious damage is likely to occur.
What to do about it
Schedule an appointment with a vehicle repair shop as soon as possible when the check engine light illuminates. Anytime the OBDII system detects a vehicle problem and turns on the light, it also generates and stores a code in the system’s memory. Your service technician has specialized equipment that plugs into the vehicle’s OBDII system and reads the trouble code or codes generated. They can then review that code against an industry database to help identify the severity of the problem, narrow down which vehicle system it’s occurring on, and decide how to fix it. You can also help your technician by noticing if any other gauges registered outside the normal range, or if other indicator lights came on at the same time as the check engine light.

Happy driving!
