The Oklahoma Historical Society will commemorate Juneteenth with a free educational program at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City on Thursday, June 18, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Juneteenth commemorates the momentous occasion of emancipation in the United States after the Civil War. The courageous efforts of Freedmen and their descendants to achieve and protect their rights in Indian Territory became a central theme of Reconstruction and continue to shape Oklahoma today. A panel featuring Eli Grayson (moderator), LeEtta Osborn-Sampson, Dr. Carla Pratt, and Marilyn Vann will discuss the history of Freedmen and provide context to contemporary debates surrounding tribal citizenship.

This event is sponsored by the OHS Black Heritage Committee. Light refreshments will be available. No registration is required.

Our editor, Brennen Matthews, and family were recently in Luther, OK, visiting the Threatt Filling Station. What a treat it must have been to spend some time with Edward Threatt Sr. He is leading the family's charge these days and doing a wonderful job. Check out their story in the June/July issue! It is a fascinating one.

Yes, tell your Members of Congress to champion H.R. 5470/S. 2887 to designate US Route 66 as a National Historic Trail.

Oklahoma is the heart of Route 66. More drivable miles, more iconic stops, more history than anywhere else on the Mother Road.

This year it turns 100, and Congress has a chance to help preserve it.

H.R. 5470/S. 2887 would designate Route 66 as a National Historic Trail, securing preservation for the small businesses, landmarks, and communities that have defined this stretch of American road for a century.

Oklahoma's heritage deserves a champion in Congress. Tell your Members of Congress to be one.
