A DucatiMH900e just sold for $25,678 on Bring a Trailer with only 572 original miles. This sale was lower than another MH900e with only 322 original miles just six months ago.
Is the collector market cooling? Not necessarily…
The MH900e is a limited-edition tribute to Mike Hailwood's 1978 Isle of Man TT victory. With a unique design and only 2,000 units produced, it's cherished by enthusiasts and collectors.
However, these bikes are barely keeping pace with inflation.
Most MH900es have under 1,000 miles, and those still in the crate fetch the highest prices ($45,000 in May 2022). With little provenance due to decades in storage, their value remains stagnant. Additionally, they haven't reached their 25-year classic status yet, which usually results in a value bump.
If all MH900es are treated as special investments, their uniqueness wanes.
Owning a bike dedicated to a racing icon like Hailwood is less fun if it can't be ridden because NO ONE else is riding theirs… at 572 miles that’s averaging 25.9mi annually… vehicles have to be prepped for long term storage (gas, tires, etc…) which may or may not be done diligently by the owner… a 3,000mi MH900e might be in better working condition (internally) than an ultra low mileage, ridden once a year bike to show off to friends?
In another decade, the MH900e may become a valuable investment, but for now, consider other options.
When its value does rise, it will likely outperform the early 2000s market, making it an iconic motorcycle to own.
