🚒 SUPPORTING THE FAMILY OF FIREFIGHTER MASON FERCOVIC-ORTEGEL 🚒

Local 4779 is raising funds to support the family of Spotsylvania County FREM Firefighter Mason Fercovic-Ortegel who was tragically lost on Lake Anna this past weekend.

Mason was the sole provider for his wife and 16-month-old daughter, and we want to do everything we can to help take some of the financial burden off his family.

Yesterday, Louisa County Fire & EMS units responded to a structure fire across the street from Company 5 in Locust Creek. While two outbuildings were lost, the quick actions of suppression crews prevented the fire from extending to the nearby home.

Company 5 is one of only two stations in the county staffed with a two-person career crew that cross-staffs an ambulance, engine, tanker, and brush unit. Fortunately, the crew was in quarters when this call was dispatched and was able to respond immediately. Had they been committed to an EMS transport, the outcome could have been much different.

Like many volunteer stations across the Commonwealth, Company 5 is supported by a dedicated group of volunteers who give countless hours to serve their community. However, they also have jobs, families, and other commitments, and simply cannot always be available at a moment’s notice. That reality makes consistent career staffing an important part of ensuring reliable fire protection for the citizens of Locust Creek.

As the current recruit school nears graduation, we look forward to seeing the planned staffing of Engine 5 become a reality. Yesterday’s incident serves as a reminder of the value that dedicated fire suppression staffing brings to our community, and we remain committed to supporting efforts that strengthen the safety of both our firefighters and the citizens we serve.

We would like to take the time to congratulate all of our members who have successfully completed their probationary period! This is one of the first major milestones at the beginning of what we know will be long and successful careers.

Our department continues to grow, and we are extremely grateful for the dedication our members show every day. Their commitment to bettering themselves and providing exceptional service to the citizens of Louisa County does not go unnoticed.

Congratulations to each of you on this accomplishment — we are proud to have you as part of our department and our Local 4779 family!

This weekend some of our members participated in a two day training at an acquired structure hosted in neighboring Fluvanna County.

They practiced skills like Hose Line Advancement, Ladders, Search and Rescue, Vent Enter Search, Forcible Entry, and Firefighter Rescue and Survival.

The second day was comprised of live fire scenarios, and practicing some of the same skills in live fire conditions!

Our members constantly work to get better to serve the citizens of Louisa County!

A huge step for the IAFF and all unions in Virginia!

The Virginia Professional Fire Fighters (VPFF) celebrates the passing of historic collective bargaining legislation in the Virginia General Assembly. A long fought victory, it will provide Virginia’s public service workers the ability to collectively bargain with their employers for wages, benefits and working conditions.
