Public Service Announcement

This morning within a one hour time period we received 9 calls requesting our services to winch out vehicles that had freshly slid into the ditch. 4 of the requests were in neighboring counties but 5 were here in Lawrence County. Unfortunately there are many of these requests that we can’t safely get our trucks to. After all we are driving vehicles just like everyone else. Snow usually isn’t a problem, but ice is a totally different ballgame.

We wanted to take a moment and share some information that will save you money, and maybe even save you from being injured. Although the sun is shining and it’s been 9 days since a lot of the precipitation fell, the constant thaw and refreeze has made some solid sheets of ice in shaded areas. Of course many of these areas are on hills and in curves that don’t allow for even the best drivers to react before it’s too late. IN ALL HONESTY THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST DANGEROUS TIME TO TRAVEL ON ROADS THAT AREN’T STATE ROUTES. With our current temperatures it’s probably not going to get better until we get some rain or a major warm up.

What can you do to avoid a situation such as this?

1. Until the roads get better, AVOID TRAVEL ON BACKROADS (taking the short cuts.) Travel the main roads and State routes if at all possible.

2. If you choose to travel on the back roads, reduce your speed and drive as if you would if the roads were snow or ice covered. You never know what’s around the next curve.

The same logic goes for walking on your sidewalks and driveways in shaded areas at your home.

If you do find yourself in a ditch, or a crash in general, give us a call. We will work with you to see if it’s an area that we can safely access.
