Labor Day weekend is one of the busier travel stretches of the year, and the roads reflect it.

Five things worth doing before you pull out of the driveway:
1. Leave early and build in buffer time. Outbound traffic peaks Friday afternoon and the return peaks Monday evening, so an hour of flexibility saves a lot of frustration.
2. Take five minutes for a walkaround. Check tire pressure and tread, top off your fluids, test the wipers, and confirm every light works before dark.
3. Set your route and your music before you shift into drive. Every adjustment you make at highway speed is attention borrowed from the road.
4. Buckle everyone, every row. Back seat included, short legs of the trip included.
5. Trade off drivers every two hours or so, and stop when you are drowsy rather than trying to finish strong.

If a newly licensed driver is taking a shift this weekend, holiday traffic is a real skill and it is worth coaching from the passenger seat. Our instructors teach a defensive framework built for exactly this kind of driving: https://topdriver.com/education-blog/5-rules-of-the-smith-system/

Five seconds of looking at your phone at 55 miles per hour covers the length of a football field. Read that again, then picture driving the length of a field with your eyes closed, because that is the honest version of what a five-second glance costs. And five seconds is generous. It is a text preview, a song change, a quick check of the map.

Distracted driving is also bigger than phones, which is the part that surprises people. It falls into three buckets. Technology, like navigation, vehicle controls, and notifications. Passengers, like friends, kids, and pets in the car. And surroundings, like crash scenes, construction, and billboards.

New drivers have the least experience recovering their attention once it is gone, which is exactly why we teach students to name all three. Set the route and the music before you pull out, and put the phone somewhere you cannot reach it: https://topdriver.com/education-blog/distracted-driving/

One of the questions we hear most often: how does an 18, 19, or 20 year old get their Illinois driver's license? Here is the path. First, complete a state-approved six-hour adult driver education course. Then obtain an instruction permit and pass the written and vision tests. From there, hold the permit for at least three months and complete 10 hours of supervised driving, including two hours at night, before taking the road test. The whole process typically takes three to five months, so the sooner you start, the sooner you are on the road. Top Driver's adult program covers every step: https://topdriver.com/illinois-adult-driving-school/

31% of all traffic-related deaths are the direct result of alcohol impairment. Nearly a third of lives lost on the road, and every one of those crashes was preventable. The prevention is not complicated: decide how you are getting home before you go out, agree on a sober driver, speak up when someone should not be driving, and learn to recognize the signs of an impaired driver so you can put distance between you and them. We cover this in driver education because new drivers need it early, but it is a conversation worth having with everyone in the house: https://topdriver.com/education-blog/impaired-driving-what-you-need-to-know/
