Driving anxiety is more common than people realize. For new drivers, returning drivers, or anyone who has had a scare on the road, getting behind the wheel can feel like a much bigger deal than it looks from the outside.

If this is you, or your teen, a few things that help:
- Start in low-stress environments. Empty parking lots and quiet neighborhoods are perfect for getting comfortable with the basics again.
- Repeat easy routes until they feel automatic, then add a new one.
- Choose your timing. Off-peak hours mean less traffic and less pressure.
- Ride with someone calm. Anxiety is contagious, and so is calm.
- Be patient with yourself. Every confident driver was once a nervous one.

If you have driven anywhere in Illinois this month, you have already met the orange barrels, and you will be seeing a lot more of them.

Work zones are some of the most unpredictable stretches of road you will drive. Lane configurations change overnight, speed limits drop suddenly, and workers are often just a few feet from moving traffic.

A few things to teach new drivers (and remember yourself):
- Start slowing down the moment you see the first warning sign, not when you reach the cones
- Merge early when lanes are closing, last-second merges cause crashes
- Keep extra following distance, traffic ahead can stop without warning
- Put the phone away, work zones are not the place for a distracted glance

Slowing down by 10 mph through a work zone adds maybe a minute to your trip. It can save a life.
