Buckling up is the least impressive safety habit there is, and the most reliable. Wearing a seat belt cuts crash related injuries by roughly half, keeps you in the vehicle instead of being thrown from it, and lets the airbag do its job, since an airbag is designed to work with a belt rather than in place of one.

It also keeps you conscious and able to get out of the car if the crash leaves you somewhere dangerous. Teens are the group least likely to wear one, which is why we cover it early in driver education and why it works better when the habit is already set at home.

The rule that sticks is simple: the car does not move until everyone is belted, every row, every trip, including the short ones.

About 1 in 5 people killed in motor vehicle crashes are pedestrians or cyclists, and the locations are not dramatic.

Crosswalks, right turns, parking lots, and residential streets account for most of it, which happens to be exactly where new drivers spend their first months. Sharing the road well is a short list of habits worth teaching early.

Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks, even when they cross where they should not. Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk, because it is stopped for someone you cannot see yet. In Illinois, leave bicyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing, and wait if there is not room to do it safely.

Check the blind spot before turning right, and look before opening your door into a bike lane. Every one of these comes down to attention, which is the first thing distraction takes away.

Meet Andrew Schumacher, our September Instructor Spotlight at our Wilmette location.

Andrew is just over six months into teaching driver education, and when we asked what he enjoys most, the answer was immediate: working with student drivers and getting to witness their successes. He says what sets Top Driver apart is the focus on proactive, intelligent driving, and that the job asks for tolerance, patience, and a real passion for teaching.

The challenge he sees most in new drivers is distraction, so he keeps returning to one idea with his students: driving is a privilege, and the habits you build early carry through the rest of your driving life. His favorite moment so far was a student who could not get hand over hand turns to click until, after twenty or thirty minutes of practice, it finally did.

His approach to nerves starts with breathing exercises, and his single best safety tip is to drive with manners, because most overwhelming situations never start if you do.

Ohio drivers ages 18 to 20, here is the part that catches people off guard.

Getting your first Ohio license now requires state-approved Class D driver education, which means 24 hours of instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor, plus 50 hours of supervised driving practice before you can schedule the road test.
