Just had a very interesting 2016 Chevrolet 3500 pick up truck in the shop. This is a nicely modded truck with a highly built diesel engine unit the owner said it was pumping out 700 hp and 1400 foot pounds of torque. It had beautiful aftermarket wheels and looked great. Owner had rust repair done and repaint of the entire truck bed. Aside from the truck bed this is a truly beautiful truck.

The repaint had virtually every defective problem from a poor paint job. It had excessive orange peel, dry spray, bits of crud in the paint, sand marks, and just a general lack of any sort of gloss. One good thing it did have was plenty of paint. The thickness was about double that factory paint. A thicker paint allows a detailer to fix the defects that came out of the spray booth. This was a five step correction process. We started with three stages of wet sanding from very fine to super fine sandpaper, and then followed with compounding and a finish polish. The process turned this ugly duckling paint job into a swan.

Had a very interesting vehicle in this past week. It was a 2016 Chevrolet 3500 Truck. It had a built diesel engine which the owner said cranks out 700 hp and 1400 pound feet of torque. It was a very nice truck that has been very tastefully modified. The problem was truck bed rust issues above the rear wheels were repaired and repainted by an area shop. The problem was that the painter left dry spray, excessive orange peel, sand scratches, and dirt in the paint. The truck-bed paint had pretty much every defect you can imagine on a repaint, except for probably fish eyes.

This was going to be a major challenge. Fortunately, the paint measured about twice as thick as factory paint. That is typical for many repaints. The thicker, the paint the more options a detailer may have to bring out gloss and clarity to paint that did not come out out of the paint booth properly. So, after a five step process - three steps of wet sanding plus compounding with a rotary and then a finish polish resulted in paint that nicely matches the factory paint on the truck cab. After all was done, then we applied a eight year rated ceramic coating.

Just finished a very cool 94 Mustang Cobra pace car. Despite only 15k miles, the single stage red paint was pocked marked with staining from water dripping from a roof of a barn like garage. One of the more technical details in recent years. Aggressive buffing was a great improvement alone but still left a fair amount of etchings and stains. To really do it right required sanding with 3000 and followed by machine polishing to a great gloss. But doing so by hand is way too slow for the entire hood and rear trunk lid. So while spraying water, 3000 grit sandpaper was used on a 3 inch buffer to hit each spot for maybe two seconds of machine sanding. It worked Perfectly. See video. Here is another makeover, this time it is a 03 GMC Yukon. 176k. It was in great shape in the interior. On the exterior the body was good but definitely needed some love. After some polishing I think this 03 loss 10 years of age. It’d be like getting a new car.

I had the pleasure of working on a 57 Chevy resto mod that would be perfectly at home sitting on stage at the annual SEMA auto extravaganza in Las Vegas. It is one gorgeous black Chevy. It was repainted many years ago to an extremely high standard, but through going to car shows, etc. the paint was just not popping like it should and also there were certain areas like the top of the fenders that seems to attract scratches that needed some serious buffing. This 57 Chevy was buffed with some two-step polishing with a rotary and then finishing off with a dual action polisher to get the paint as perfect as possible before a ceramic coating was installed.

We love extreme makeovers! With the prices of new and used cars why not renew your ride?! Here is a 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The trim was totally UV washed out. The running boards were a light grey, but in 2009 they were Black. This SUV was repainted in recent years and was very good.

The trim was dyed and further protected with a ceramic trim coating. It should last for years.

For good measure the paint was machined polished before a 5 year coating was applied.
