It is not a wear allowance. We make it thin on purpose, because a thinner overlay has higher fatigue strength, not lower. Reuse means putting that same surface back to work.

Thicker at the centerline than at the parting line, it holds a stable oil wedge without the knocking extra clearance brings. How much you need depends on your RPM.
