This one is personal for me.
If you don't read this it wasn't for you.
Layla Chavarria was part of the very first team my daughter Abigail and I ever coached together.
We were blessed with an incredible group of girls. They were competitors, they were teammates, and somehow, they just kept winning, despite some pretty poor coaching decisions by two coaches who were still learning. 😂
But the truth is, I learned more from those girls than they probably ever learned from me.
Layla was the youngest player on that team. She was competing with her older sister for playing time, and she never backed down from the challenge.
Her work ethic was different.
She was always asking for one more rep.
One more swing.
One more ground ball.
One more chance to get better.
And that attitude was contagious. It spread throughout that entire team.
Then Layla got sick.
When we learned she had been diagnosed with lymphoma, it was heartbreaking for everyone who knew and loved her.
Her family, her school, her teammates, coaches at Ponchatoula high and our community rallied around her.
Layla did the physical fighting.
We prayed 🙏 🤲
And somehow, while fighting something that most of us couldn't even imagine, Layla kept moving forward.
She continued chasing her goals. She earned a softball scholarship. She graduated high school. She took college classes.
And through so much of it, she smiled.
Then came the moment we had all been praying for.
Layla rang that bell.
🎗️ I AM CANCER FREE. 🎗️
That moment meant something to all of us.
But here's the thing about Layla...
She wasn't finished giving.
She still has so much life ahead of her, and she has already given so much inspiration to the people around her.
So I want to do something that feels right to me.
I want to honor Layla.
I want to celebrate her strength, her work ethic, her smile and that little girl who was always asking for one more rep.
And I want to use the thing that brought us together in the first place "softball".
