🚨 MAJOR THREAT TO THE COOSA RIVER 🚨

The Coosa River is home to the greatest mass extinction in modern history. It was the first place PCBs, a known carcinogen, was ever commercially manufactured. The Coosa River is also home to a belt of graphite, a critical mineral used for EV batteries.

We’ve been preparing for this moment for years. Westwater Resources, the graphite mining company, has acquired 42,000 acres of mineral rights in Coosa County. They are preparing to create an open-pit mine that will harm Weogufka Creek, Noneless Creek, and Lake Mitchell. It will impact wildlife and hunting on the Coosa WMA, quality of life, and create a high potential for acid mine drainage in one of the last remaining wild places in the Coosa River basin.

We need your help. The Army Corps of Engineers has a comment period for this mine until July 26, 2026.

Will you submit a comment letter explaining your concerns about the mine, ask for a public hearing, and ask for an extension of the comment period? Learn more and submit comments at CoosaRiver.org/Graphite.

COMMUNITY MEETING MONDAY JULY 20, 8AM - Monday's meeting is because we all have concern and/or curiosity about the proposed graphite mining in Coosa County. Coosa Riverkeeper is here to help residents to understand how the mining process and the permitting process works. We need a public hearing and public participation so that Westwater Resources and the regulatory agencies can understand and address our concerns.
